Okay, I'm moving soon because I got a new job. The place where I'm going to live gets free cable including all movie channels and such because the previous house owners knew someone who worked with the cable company. If we get a cable modem hooked up we're going to have to start paying for cable too probably, so that could effectively cause the cost of cable modem service to be ridiculous. (basically it would then become cable modem + cost of cable = effective cable modem cost)

DSL is not offered in the area for some reason. I have no idea how much DirectPC type internet service costs.

Now, we do have one semi-option available to us. The guy's brother in law lives 2 or 3 houses up, roughly 50 yards away, from the house I'll be living in. He's offered to let us try to get a wireless network configured if we share the cost of the cable modem with him. I recently bought one of those Linksys wireless G routers that can use the sveasoft firmware that supposedly ups the reception range. Do you guys think it will be at all possible for a signal to carry that far? Or am I probably just screwed back into the stone age of dialup?

Bleh, I just thought of something. I don't even have a modem. :p

You've been here long enough to know that you're going to get your ass chewed for admitting theft and trying to steal more.

Really? I never even considered this as a problem. I figure if I can go into McDonald's and get wireless for free what's the difference with getting it free from my neighbor if he says it's okay. Besides, I didn't steal the cable. I'm moving into a friend's house who already has free cable so that's just part of my living circumstances.

Can a wireless router give me 50 yards worth of juice? How much is DirectPC? As I said, I'm listing the only options I have. It's not my house so I can't just tell them to stop stealing cable.

It's still stealing - and I'm talking about the cable, not sharing the cost of internet. That part might subtly violate the TOS from the ISP, but it's not stealing by any normal measure.
