broadband access

gigapet

Lifer
Ok my mother wants broadband in her home. Some nieghbors as close to her as a half a mile have DSL. THe phone company says she isnt elligible for dsl. Cable is not available either. ISDN = suck So what if anything is possible?

I was thinking satellite but I dont know much about that like who is a good provider, how costly it is , what is its reliablility and speed.

Any input would be valuable and appreciated thank you in advance.

I would demand that the tele co physically checks her lines for DSL compatability especially if the service is new in your area. I had to fight with centurytel for 6 months until the pulled their head out of their collective asses and rerouted my line which knocked off 2,000 ft.

Ausm

Link doesn't work but I am familiar with DirecWAY, I'd say if you want broadband you really have no choice.

I wouldn't get DirecWAY if you are a gamer or hard core downloader.

for 300 in hardware and nearly 200 in installation and a 1 year contract of 60 dollars a month i get at best 500k downstream and 50k upstream.........seems awfully steep

Damn that is steep, didn't know you had to pay all those fees.

Don't get it then.

Save up your money and move out of the boonies.

500k downstream seems pretty good for downloading no?

thats the funny part. My mom doesnt live in the boonies. 3 minutes from New haven, CT which is a city. And like I said I know a handful of people in town and in surrounding towns that have access. Maybe she is just in that 1% no mans land for broadband.

Not when cable is 2 to 3 MB down and is considerably cheaper.

Edit: It is better than dial-up, though.

I'm at 640k with my DSL but that will jump up to 1.5 when I switch to Earthlink DSL for a better price.

500k is ok, not a speed demon but way better than 56k dial up speeds.

My mothe rtalked with the DSL company again at the suggestion of Ausm and they did a trace and all this other jazz and tol my mome that we were 153 "cable feet" too far from the main station or one of the other connection areas. Doesnt that just suck. I guess thas what she gets for living in connecticut aka patheticut
