What's with the 2 little gay guys constantly mugging for the camera during the performance?

Sorry, I don't watch any of these shows, but I think Ms. Boyle was wonderful.

He was outstanding, another shocker. If it wasn't for Boyle singing Les Mis, I'd enjoy listening Potts more. I love listening to good tenors. (Boyle I'm guessing a mezzo-soprano.)

I think there are quite a few fantastic opera singers in the wings that simply couldn't make a career out of singing and had to do something else for a career. It takes being a good actor, having good stage presence, and traveling around staying for months at a time in dorm settings while doing a season somewhere. At the same time, doing it for next to nothing and often not even enough to maintain one's living accomodations while away. Beyond that it can take years for operatic voices to mature before its more 'marketable'. My ex is a soprano (who hadn't/hasn't been able to make a sustaining career out of it), and I was able to see how much more that it takes to be successful in opera than just being a very good singer.

Great article, I think the author makes some good points.

At this point, given the numerous copies up on youtube now, its been viewed (I'd estimate) atleast 6-7m times today alone (12m total). The video really struck a chord in people.

So much that I think if she improves her hairstyle, plucks the 'caterpillers' as Squisher mentioned above, and finds a nicer dress so that she's more attractive next week (relatively speaking), millions of people around the world might actually be disappointed, lol.

So is Simon Cowell less of an ass in this show than in American Idol? He's still critical from what I remember from Season 1, but he's definitely a lot more lenient on singing huh?

I think one of the reasons she's so absolutely fantastic is that she appears completely accepting and stoic. She's not offended by their derogatory remarks (everyone expected you to fail), turns to walk offstage without requiring validation or a resolution, and basically just seems to be happy that they let her sing. What an appealing and refreshing attitude in the glory-seeking days of fame that most of these shows facilitate so naturally.

Amazing. When you see her, you never imagine that kind of voice coming out of her. Only other time I was similarly shocked was when I first saw Rick Astley.

Hid in plain sight, singing in a church choir. Looks are probably why no one ever "noticed" her before, which is unfortunate because she's got a singing voice that can't be dismissed.

What I was most impressed by was the fact that she held her shit together... I mean, everyone went absolutely nuts after she started singing. Having never experienced that before, I don't know that I could just keep singing without breaking down in laughter, or tears... or both.

Kudos to her

Indeed. She was a mouse before, a mouse after, but a rock while singing.

The lyrics of the song she chose to sing could be considered her "fuck you" to the people who judged her on looks alone.

I Dreamed A Dream lyrics:
There was a time, when men were kind
And their voices were soft
And their words were inviting
There was a time, when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they turn your hope apart
As they turn your dreams to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my dreams with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'd come to me
That we would live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from the hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

I happen to know the song too well considering how much my family used to watch Le Mis growing up. It probably explains why she sang it with such conviction. I don't know, that's just my take.

By the way, she's not that ugly, and the audience reaction to the way she looks is a bit ridiculous in the youtube video. I finally watched it the other day. I mean, it's one thing to judge a person on looks, it's another to make it so obvious that you disapprove how they look. All she looks is old. She doesn't have any hideous imperfections. It's not like the phantom of the opera or a hunchback walked out there. And even then, fuck their reactions.

Oh and while, she gave an amazing show, the song as I remember it had more range than she displayed. Which shouldn't be taken too critical, just that she has room to grow, hopefully.

No doubt she chose a perfect song, and it probably does have personal significance with it being about shattered dreams.

I predict she'll sing Memory from Cats next or soon, another moving song, while also an Elaine Page and UK favorite.

I don't think it was so much that she was homely, but more her not carrying herself like a singer(no confidence).

Whoopie and Rosie, that's ugly, but she's certainly not in their league by any stretch. A makeover would do her wonders, altho at this point in time that might undermine her worldwide appeal.

Hmm, I never interpreted the song as an "F.U.", to me it's a song about willful delusion and broken dreams.

She simply needs to look less frumpy.

I agree that the song calls for more range than she used, but I have no idea if she's range-limited or it was simply her interpretation. I'd imagine that when you are not singing "in the moment" - when you are not immersed in the character - the dynamic suffers a little bit.
