Bringing back the password logon requirement in XP ?

Being accustomed to Win 2K, and being familiar with the security file locations in Win 2K I am at a loss to find the comparable security file locations for Win XP.

Presently the XP OS that is in this notebook has nixed the password and defaulted back to requiring the OK button to be pushed, as the password is apparently incorrectly remembered, thus no security.

Does anyone know how one can get to security within XP so as to bring the function of requiring a password back (in XP) ?

If you mean the login screen where you type your name and password. When the system first boot's up. Try the following. This will force you into typing in a password to login.

Goto Start->Run Then type in Control userpasswords2. Make sure there is a checkmark in "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"

I hope this is what you are looking for.

Thanks HalfC, but of important note, does one have the option of entering new password(s) when using this RUN utility ? The reason that this is happening, in the first place, is that the password that we assume should be used, is not matching up with what XP has as the password.

In Win 2K there is a was to go into security and change the password.

Will I run into a "now one needs to use a password to log in but since I don't know it I a am totally, totally locked out" phenomena ? - (I want to be able to enter a new password, so as to be able to get in after setting this option)

Goto Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management. Then 'Double click' on Local users and groups. Then select the 'Users' dir. You will then see a list of all the users ID's on the right side of the screen. You can then change the user's password by 'right clicking' on the user name and select 'Set Password'.

This should do the job in resetting the password.

[edit] Do this in combo with the tip I gave in my first reply.

if you wanted to go the other way, and have the user login automatically all the time, would you just "remove password" in the user control panel? I need the comp to remember one username so that it is still capable of logging into network shares.

I think you might have to use the autologon feature of a utility (like TweakUI) to get the system to work the way you want. (It lets you set a default user name and password so that the system logs on that way at startup.) It depends on what OS is sharing the network shares. NT-type OSes want a user id and password before they'll give access to a network share. A blank password won't do it, AFAIK.

Thanks Half C and others. In that this notebook is not networked, or at least not acting as a server, I don't have to worry about the password propensities of other OSs.
Via the Control Panel and then directly to "User Accounts" (not via Computer Management, in that this is the "home" version) I was able to modify the administrator accounts to require passwords. I had gotten as an administrator, so that was in my favor.
Thanks again.
