Bringing a laptop into an interview.

Is it a good idea to bring a laptop into an interview especially if the interviewer is interested in if you have adequate computer skills?

For example, if you wanted to give the interviewer a slide show presentation using MS powerpoint would this be a good idea? Would it impress the interviewer?

Finally has anyone ever done this and what was the outcome? Did you get the job?
 
I wouldnt, I think there is more of a chance it will backfire.

Why do you do a ppt presentation showing off your skills, your resume should already have done that?
 
i had a guy do it and it backfired on him...the thing didnt work properly and it made him look pretty bad cause it was for a technical position.
Send the presentation BEFORE the interview, make sure whoever there can open it first, and then from that you can give your presentation. That or make printouts of everything. dont have ANYTHING that could backfire for you the day of the interview, thus no laptops.
 
If they wanted to test your skills it would probably be on a machine they set up themselves, possibly even running some canned assessment program.

I'd only suggest doing it to show a digital media portfolio (art, movies, sound, levels) or maybe applications if you're a developer.

You can bring it along, but don't expect to be allowed to whip it out.
 
I wouldn't bother unless the interviewer already stated that he wanted some sort of powerpoint demonstration, and even then, I'd leave it in my briefcase unless needed.

don't do it. you need to present YOURSELF. they want to see you for how you interrelate, not how you can present something. if you wanted to present a portfolio, you should be applying for a marketing position.
 
We'll thanks for the heads up. I'm a special ed major and the one main issue for beginner teachers is how well does he/she know technology. I personally love technology and I wanted to show the person who might be interviewing me that I can put together a power point presentation rather easily.

I could always have samples of my power point work in my portfolio but I thought a laptop would add another dimension and that it would be a positive experience.

Unless you want to get laid by your roommate or embarrass her.
 
No...if they want you to be tested they'll have their own computer (I know that's how I did it when interviewing someone who's skills I wasn't sure about.)
