Bringing a digital camera to a party - geeky or OK?

I'm invited to a non-geek party and I'm not sure what the proper etiquette is... I mean, these are the stereotypical cool kids that you fear in highschool... Somehow I've become good friends with one of them and she invited me to a get together..... So a bunch of girls that look like models and a bunch of beatniks will be in attendance - should I leave my beloved digicam at home or not? My gut instinct is telling me to leave it and just to bring a bottle of wine.. But my inner geek is tormented! Help!

its quite common, i don't think it would be considered weird... but just don't be creepy and take pictures of people you don't know.

how old of people? in college, digital is where its at. you don't wanna be caught with one of those kodak disposables.

College..Well, I'm an undergrad and most of her friends (and her) are in grad school.. Digital cameras are in? I mean, I know at drinking parties they're cool.. Hmmm.. I'll consider having my gf stash it in her purse (she, unlike my friend and her friends, already knows that I'm a geek!) 😉

Digital cameras are best for capturing the aftermath

I'm not exactly sure what you meant but I'll take that as a "leave it at home" vote..

Sounds like you are still in high school, just wait until you get to college and attend a frat party.... wild orgies mang.

I've taken a digital camera with a mini-tripod to a number of parties and even the camera-shy love it, especially looking at the pictures immediately after they've been taken. Don't worry about it. 🙂

If it's small enough bring it, but don't whip it out right away (Uh, the digital camera we're talking about here.)

Get a feel of the crowd first, to see if you think they'd be cool with it or not. Take some pics of ppl. you know first, then if you fell like it, do some random crowd shots, then do whatever you want.

i agree. only use it occassionally. don't be that annoying guy running around taking 100 pics

Grad students? I don't think they will mind. By that age, a lot of "cool kid" crap is replaced by "we're adults" nonsense, so I think a digicam is fine. 🙂

BTW, the mini-tripod is an excellent idea.

Oh, and I agree with the strategy RishiS suggested.

As usual with femmes...size does matter 😉. If its small enough to be unobtrusive (Powershot S-series etc.) then sure, why not. If a girl has to ask "is there a camera in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" then you're screwed...

Leave the camera at home and bring a bottle of wine.
