<< FFM, my local cable provider's service sucks. Any chance we can flush them and reload?

;)
>>

Actually, I'd love to tell this guy off on the phone right now. He's telling me that we owe him money because he's lost business from his cable modem being down. I told him that the agreement he signed states that it's for entertainment only and that we're not responsible for any business losses. He starts going off on how waivers don't mean crap in court and how he can take me (us?) to court and get his money back. He seems to be dead set on it. If he wants to take us to court and lose a load of money again for lawyers when the judge says that what he signed is what he signed, I'm going to laugh. :)

And if he wins... I'm getting a new job.

Anybody have problems with their service spasmodically turning off? Sometimes my cable will be on for several days, but then sometimes it will just go off for no reason. On some days, it wont come on at all (it just keeps on trying to connect). I call ed @Home, but their cust. service sucks. All i was told was that they are undergoing cable changes in my area(I live in Wilmington,DE). Also, it doesnt go out at peak times, either, unless 1130 wednesday morning is when every1 is on.... ANyone else get this problem?

No problems with things on my end (but dang, AT has been slow all day). I had a lovely conversation with a very helpful tier 2 tech this past weekend. Tier 1 was sort of frustrating, since the guy assumed I was a moron who barely knew how to turn my computer on and he spoke to me like I was 5, but when I got bumped up, I spoke with an extremely helpful and friendly tech (it was a female, so unless you have a high voice, FFM, it wasn't you). Got my problem resolved within an hour and all was well again. :D

I've had great experiences with just about every tier 2 tech; tier 1....sometimes I wonder if some of them even know English.

Okay I'm bored :D

1.) Whats your favorite cable modem? I've heard that the 3com's typically have the fastest connection times, but the surfboards are looking nice too.

2.) What does @home give starting techs? I just got a job as a tech for dial up at a local isp and make a whole $6 an hour :(

I've had @Home service for 19 months now. At the beginning it was a little rough, but mostly the service has been flawless. Unfortunately, the last 2-3 weeks have been horrible: poor pings, slow downloads, regularly dead name and proxy servers (often for hours). I don't know what the heck is going on after experiencing such good service for so long. Is the recent downturn related to @Home's bankruptcy proceedings? I live outside of Philly and am with Comcast@Home.

<< You wouldn't happen to have an amp installed somewhere in your house, would you? >>

Nope, neither an amp on the cable line or one for a guitar or anything. My cable modem's also plugged directly into the wall for whatever the hell that's worth. *mutters* Guess when midterms ease up I'll get a line tech to investigate. :) Thanks a bunch FFM.

Why has my activity light been blinking even when my pc is off for the last month? I have Comcast@home, ZoneAlarm and Norton...no viruses.

Could be potential hackers. Could be someone pinging the wrong IP. Could be a Code Red computer trying to scan for open ports, etc. Not a problem if you have Norton/ZoneAlarm

yeah.. My modem loses sync about 10 to 15 times a day, usually right in a row, for anywhere from 60 seconds to 15 minutes at a time.

Annoying! AH! Can't get crap done. Doesn't really seem to be a signal strength issue, although the old 3com sharkfin said it was (30db or so upstream power levels). The 3com just dropped IP for about 30 seconds at LEAST once an hour though.. just enough to lose SSH connections everywhere (I do code for living.. on vi, on a remote terminal..). This new PoS RCA junk loses sync entirely for much longer times, but seemingly not as often.

I did go into the cable room the other day at the Apt. and noticed some moron cable tech added extenders to all the cable drops, and the metal connector was posistioned in such a way that it could be swinging and hitting the metal on the case surrounding all the cable jacks (I live in an Apt.). I think I'm about to go up there with a roll of electrical tape to make sure that's not what's happening.

"Forward Path" (upstream I take it): Received Signal Strength: 6.3 dBmV
"Return path" (downstream, I would assume): Power Level: 44.0 dBmV

Any ideas? :) AT&T is clueless out here, I'm sick of talking to level1 morons who tell me to reset my computer. Bah.

Using AOL AIM or ICQ, I can't tranfer files to other fellow @home users, but can send/receive to others on differnet networks. Anyone else experience this?

yoyo25,

I don't have @home, but i wonder if you could answer a general question for me? My cable will die, for a minute to an hour during the day. I have called Adelphia, my provider, they tell me its me. I have reformatted, rebooted, unplugged, and everything they tell me to do. When it drops, if I reset my modem, it won't come back for anywhere from two minutes to two hours, and then when it does, it seems to work fine, before it suddenly drops again. Is there any way it can be me, even though the cable line light is dead? This happens at least three to four times a week, sometimes all day and night long.

spankyOO7,
Not sure what you're referring to, but there are many things out that can increase speed -including someone on the inside at the local office (not me) to "accidentally" click the wrong button and uncap you. I'm going to follow the rules, though, sorry.

GirlFriday,
Adelphia is @Home, dear. :) Adelphia "rents" @Home's broadband and sells it to you :)
Anyway, if your cable light dies when you lose your connection, that tells me that the cable modem is functioning properly because it actually knows that it doesn't have a connection. If your cable light goes out and you lose a connection, it has nothing to do with your computer because the signal isn't even getting that far. First of all, have you ever spoken to Tier2 Most people at Tier1 aren't exactly the greatest at jumping to conclusions. ;) :p Have you had someone out to check the signal strength? I've seen this specific issue before, but there are too many possibilities. You should PM me with your username; I'll be able to run a slough of tests on your cable modem. It's possible that the modem is trying too hard with it's power adjustments and eventually poops out. It's also possible that the line strength dies at certain times of the day or spikes too much. Gimme your username, if ya don't mind?
