briefcase pc build questions

I'm looking at building a briefcase pc and as typical the more I see, the more I think about spending. Right now I'm looking at engineering a monitor mount for inside the briefcase. Vibration/shock resistant monitors are upwards of four times the cost of a standard monitor so... I'm thinking hard about a standard desktop monitor mounted to the lid with carriage type bolts through the case lid, semi isolated from a 1/8" metal plate with 1/2" rubber washers and standard bolts fully isolated from the plate by two rubber mats 1/4" ea through bolted to the monitor. The pc will travel in a cdl truck to a hotel, staying there from a week to a couple months, and back in the truck home.

The monitor I have on my desk would work very nicely but is ccfl, I guess the most obvious choice for an increase in toughness would be to use an LED LCD. I want a monitor of at least 19", preferrably widescreen. Anybody have some good hacks to harden a standard ccfl or led monitor for travel? Do I even need to worry about this?

I'm going to build a reusable chassis in the case for ease of part replacement, no duct tape/ bubble gum. I *think* minimum size on the briefcase is probably 16.5" x 22" x 6" internal dimensions, with real corners (not rounded). I also want to add long range wifi, a powerful video card - I'm leaning toward a 90 degree pci-e adapter so I can fit a full size video card, a small standard keyboard, mouse and I want it all to fit in the case for travel. Also, has to be able to play current games at decent graphics levels. I don't think any of that will be too big a problem. A big concern for me will be finding a reliable power supply that will have the guts to power it all yet still fit into the case.

All I'm doing right now is thinking about design and looking at parts, build should happen this coming winter.

Notes on the build: This is primarily a casual internet game player, occassional FPS or RPG player. I'm in the US. My budget is roughly $600 as of right now, I'm willing to do used parts. I prefer intel/nVidia, have been very happy with Linux compatibility, performance on these combos. I've searched and read anything briefcase/ mobile mod related on the first few pages of google, links and sites are appreciated though. Will not be overclocking with the likelihood of heat problems here.

More questions,

*Do you guys have suggestions on the monitor?
*Do I have to go SSD or is a laptop hdd tough enough?
*If I mount a long range wifi in the lid, will it interfere with the monitor?
*Suggestions on the PSU?
*Suggestions for a supplier/ individual sale of a briefcase big enough for all this? I need something fairly cheap, but more important is ... I don't want to build all this in and have a damn bungee cord wrapped around my case in a year.
*Any other suggestions / laughter are appreciated.

I'd use a hardshell suitcase. You should be able to get one cheap from the thrift shop.

Why not just buy a laptop?

I already have a nds xl, wanted a computer. :)

Need something fun to do over winter and hacking a rig into a briefcase is going to be it.

Yo Dawg, I built a computer in your laptop so you can compute while you compute.

Thought about the hardshell suitcase but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go metal for the protective factor. I don't know why they put a curve in almost all the hardshells... if I did have to set it on a hard surface, it would rock, wouldn't it? That's all I see at the thrifts, those old 60s, 70s pastel colored cases. I'll look at them again though, I need one with flat sides and about the size of a big briefcase.

Nice, currently unavailable though. Would be nice to have in a flood, could remove hinge and have two canoes. Could use motherboard and handle as an oar.

Seriously though, the dimensions I listed are so I can fit a 22" widescreen.

Yeah, I saw that, it would actually fit a 30" widescreen comfortably, I was just saying... the specs I listed would fit a 22. I Could get a rifle case and go dual screen.

1. Unless you are gonna be gentle with the handling/transportation of the suitcase build, I'd go with SSDs...less change of ruining the HDDs that way

2. No, WiFi will not interfere with LCD/LED panels. Otherwise laptop users would be an angry bunch of people.

3. PSU (depend on the thickness of the suitcase) could be a regular ATX, provided you have enough airflow to keep it cool (as well as the rest of your components). Otherwise you may have to look into external/Pico PSUs meant for HTPCs.

4. There are some good suggestions recommended by other posters.

5. The only other suggestions I would make, is to ensure the rigidity of the suitcase you planning on using. A friend of mine build something nearly identical to what you are attempting (his was a portable firewall/file server build to transport from home to college) and he ran into problems where the suitcase would flex enough, to cause damage to the passive CPU heatsink. The lesson of this story: double check the rigidity of the case. You should be all set, as long as you don't attempt to stack heavy objects on top of the suitcase or anything like that
