Brief video on Avatar creation in the new 360 Dash

Link - Actually looks fairly quick to create with a good number of options.

I don't see myself playing with it much (thankfully you don't have to use Avatars) but I know this is something my 6-year old and 3 year-old would love along with others who like this type of stuff. I just get happier and happier every time I see how snappy the new Dash is.

I watched this video yesterday. When people kept making all the comparisons to the Wii's Miis, I dismissed it as fanboy bullshit, as the Avatar's looked a lot better and promised more customization and use. But after seeing this video, and more importantly, hearing the video, I'm now making the comparison myself. First, it appears that there are very few options for each section, but since this is still pre-release maybe that'll change. Then, just the way it sounds, it just sounds way too much like the Wii. It's become abundantly clear to me that this is being aimed directly at the kiddies, and IMO, that sucks. Not that I would've gotten much use out of the Avatars, but the fact that the success of the Wii is penetrating real gamer's machines fucking sucks.

If Microsoft or Sony tries to make motion control their main form of input with the next consoles, I will give up gaming.

I am sure price has a LOT to do with the success of the Wii.

In the comments, Major Nelson said this is from an early build.

I actually though that it looked like there were a number of options available based on the menus. The demo just didn't go into all of them.

But again, the Avatars are optional. You don't have to create one. You can just use your gamerpic.

Exactly, which is what makes me wonder why people are bitching so much about them. They aren't going to change anything about the 360 other than give you one more option to customize your gamer profile. If you don't want to use it, don't a keep gaming like normal. If you want to try it out do it, then keep gaming like normal. I don't see how this is can possibly a negative thing at all.

I never minded them, and I still don't for the most part. I just hate to see my favorite console be kiddie-fied with the sounds and look and stuff. I at least still like that the avatars look more "real" rather than super-deformed cartoons like that on the Wii, even though they are more of a cartoon real.

This is true, its almost like a downgrade.

At this point I think Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo now are just using each other's ideas to make up what they dont have. For example the obvious, X360 and Avatars (Wii's Miis), Sony and Trophies (360's Achievements), and soon Nintendo's storage addon (both PS3+X360). Not that its a necessarily a bad thing, it just needs to be done right.

Yes, this is something I've realized also. Everybody is copying everybody and just trying to enhance on the idea.

This is more "The Sims" than "Miis", judging from the video. And I much prefer Microsoft's implementation, I must say.

How? How can it possibly be a downgrade? They aren't taking ANYTHING away to put the avatars in there, so the worst that can happen is you don't use them and nothing changes. I'm still wondering how you people can label something COMPLETELY OPTIONAL and EXTRA as a downgrade. If you don't like it then don't fucking use it and quit bitching... NOTHING changes for you. Absolutely nothing.

How could this ever make you less of a gamer? I can only imagine those complaining are frustrated teenagers desperately trying to act adult.

I'd rather my gaming machine not sound like a Fischer-Price toy when I'm navigating the menus. What is that so hard for you to understand? You enjoy cheerful sounds and pretty colors on your gaming system of choice, I don't. Get over it.

I think I'm going to start going into threads you post in and start questioning all of your opinions.

You know there will be other themes available, just like now.

Why are you so against the idea of making consoles fun for other people? It's all optional. You're not losing features or being forced to use them so what's the problem?

The same reason douchebags stop liking bands when they become popular. MS is selling out, and some people cant deal with that.

I personally think theyre alright, seems like they have a little more "personality" than the Miis, and I'm sure the hardcore will have no difficulty making hardcore avatars with battle scars, camos, angry eyebrows and big frowny faces.

Not to turn this into a Wii thread or anything, but a bunch of us "real gamers" had a blast yesterday with our GFs and a few Wii games - all the consoles are fantastic at what they do, so whats wrong with a little crossover as long as it remains optional?

Sorry i meant downgrade in usage of current generation graphics. Just saying they could of been more real rather than cartoonish. And your right nothing changes because i dont have an xbox 360. Just stating my opinion about it, not bitching about it.

I'll be forced to listen to the kid-friendly bleeps and bloops as I navigate the menu, unless they will have sound themes as well. Ever since this thread began, I've mainly complained about the sound of the new dashboard, yet nobody addresses this when they decide to quote me.

I'd rather my 360 not sound like a Wii, that's all. I don't mind consoles being made to be fun for other people, but that's the Wii's demographic, not the 360. I'd appreciate that my console of choice not be turned into a Wii right before my eyes. It's like buying a nice sports car, only after having it for 2 years the manufacturer comes in and put in an automatic transmission, then relights the dash with pretty colors that appeal to "most", and puts a few "I Support Whatever's Trendy" bumperstickers and ribbons on the back.

You guys are so quick to attack me that you gloss over the fact that I've said I like the Avatars more than Mii's, and that I don't really mind the Avatar system. I've said in previous threads that I really, really dig the new dashboard look. It's just after hearing what basically amounts to the Wii in the 360, I simply hate it. Will I get used to it? Sure. Will I fool around with the Avatars? Probably more than I should.

I'm still waiting for someone to agree with me that it sounds like Saturday morning cartoons.

EDIT: After watching the video once more, it feels like like I'm running around in the hub world of Super Mario 64 or something.

EDIT: I also owned the xbox a week, so cut me some slack. :)

I actually like it that they aren't realistic. I'm happy to see the games industry starting to move away from trying to be ultra-realistic and working on being creative artistically again. For example - in the world of team shooters, TF2 really stands out because of the art style that Valve went with. Same with the new Prince of Persia game.

I see what your point is about the sounds. But you have to see too that MS (and Sony) are seeing the HUGE demographic that they are missing that the Wii is capturing by using such things as cute sounds and Avatars like this.... you don't have to change your dash. I'm sure MS will still have other options available. But oif course your console is going to evolve to appeal to THE MASSES. MS is in it for the profits and if byt "cute-a-fying" the interface and such brings more people with disposable income to their console and away from the competitors they surely will. Just as the interface of windows has gotten softer and softer and more "mac like"

agreed 110%. The "realistic" stuff looks STUPID because its just never pulled off 100%
When you can fool me between being real and not being real then start using realistic graphics. Until then the attempts at "life-like" just come off as stupid. Even huge movie monsters like Pixar and Disney get this... they make what they can look real look real... and those things thye have yet to master (humans) they revert back to "cartoons"
