I currently have DSL into an SMC Barracade 4 port router sharing the internet connection on a full 100Mbit ethernet network. I have a laptop that supports 802.11b adn would like to be able to use this laptop at home.

What do I need to buy? Just a Wireless access point? Can I just plug this into my SMC router and be able to connect seemlessly to my existing wired network?

Ive really only looked at the Apple Airports, but they have an ethernet jack. So I could hook that up to my switch, throw a wireless card in my ibook and be fine. Im sure the linksys and dlink and whatever wireless access points have similar features. You could also get a wireless access point/router. That should be all you need to purchase.

You can just purchase a plain Access Point without the router feature, to save you money. The Access Point has an ethernet connection. You may have to configure it for IP on your network.

Anyone had experience with the Linksys access points? I may be able to get them at pretty cheap prices through a friend who is a distributor.

A/P usually cost the same as Cable/DSL Wireless Router (on sale or with rebate).

So, you are better off Buying a unit like SMC 7004 AWBR (which is a combo with three ports wired, and A/P), it goes for about $150.

Sell your current Router, or give it as a gift.

So, check your friend, but check the web too, for the best deal.
