Bridging the Geforce 3 gap

I wasn't sure whether to put this in cooling or video so I am putting it here for now (to be moved to the appropriate place by a mod if necessary).

I have a geforce 3 with a dead fan. Let me just add that the card was hardly ever used...these fans are crap.

On that note, I am considering using a crystal orb to replace the fan. My only concern is that in doing the research, I ran across this article and became a little concerned.

Its for the blue orb, but I am wondering if I might run across the same problem.

Pictures of my card are here:

I want a quick and simple solution that works out of the box. I don;t want to mess around with pennies like the guy above did. If this crystal orb isn't going to work, I might be better off getting two of these replacements for my current fan ($10 purchase minimum....its the exact same fan as mine):

(FAN) APC112507MH1N-81B

If you don't use it much, I'd vote for as little effort and uncertainty as possible, which means either getting the identical replacement, or spending $35-40 on a fx5200 replacement card (fanless 🙂 )

I just pulled my old GeForce 3 TI200 out of the closet and it has an aftermarket cooler on it. It worked well for a couple of years.😀 One note of caution if you look at the FX5200 make sure it is the 128 bit not the 64 bit. :frown:

Well, I plan on using this card often now. I would hate to see it go to waste just because of a fan. I don't understand why they ever used fans for these.

Do you know what aftermarket cooler you used?

Anyone have problems with the crystal orb as described in my original post? I am not sure at this point whether to go with the Vantec or Crystal orb

Another option (if you have good air flow around your card) Find a passive cooler that could be made to fit I, beleave Zalman May make one.

the arctic silencer v2 (the one for radeon 9800) worked great on these, i have one on my gf3. i did have to splice the fan header wires as mine came with a 3 pin fan whereas the silencer was 2 pin. used to be able to get them for $10

I think i'de like to keep my solution under $10 considering the value of the card. Basically, I want something simple that works well. I think the crystal orb is a good solution, but want to make sure i won't have the same problems as posted above

I really don't want to "make" anything to fit. I'de like something that is already made to fit and that will work.
