Bridging another router

I've got a buffalo g54s router with the tomato firmware installed. I'm thinking of getting another router and using this one as a bridge, however I'm not sure how compatible they'd be. Is it always better to get the exact same router when using one to bridge? Otherwise I might get something more powerful that supports tomato as well.
 
Since some of the extra Modes are Not always standard compliant it is always safer to get the same device, or a device with a similar chipset.
