Breathing, In through Nose out through mouth, or vice versa?

Well it's really called diaphragmatic breathing. It is hard to relearn and replace your already habitual breathing back to your original way of breathing.

Best way to do it is to lay down on your back, fold your hands over your tummy and breathing slowly all the way down. You will see your hands rise and fall with inhalation and exhalation. Breath in all the way so that your tummy is big and hold if you 2 seconds then exhale slowly.

Repeat this. like ten time. It calms and relaxes you.

Yeah, you gotta keep your mouth closed a lot of the time, too, or you'll drool the fsck all over yourself.

 
In the winter, in through the mouth and out through the nose...keeps my nose from freezing 😉

In the summer, in through the nose and out through the mouth if I'm exercising.

Otherwise, in/out through the nose unless I'm clogged up w/allergies or a cold and then, obviously, it's in/out through the mouth.

Soo...I guess that covers the possibilities, eh? 😀

So when do you decide "Oh, today is quite chilly I think I'll breath through my mouth and out through my nose starting now" ??
 
I had a football coach that always advised breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth. His reasoning was that it will cycle heat out quicker. I guess it would slow breathing down as well so your body can get more oxygen in less breaths. 😛

When it's cold enough that my nostrils stick together when breathing in the first time 😉
 
breathe in through your nose to warm, filter, and moisturize the air; exhale through your mouth.

didn't your mother teach you anything?
 
It depends. Some species of turtles can breathe with water temporarily via their cloaca (turtle butt hole).
 
If exercising you should breath in through the mouth and out your nose. I was told this gets the fresh air in faster and helps the body maintain water. You lose more water exhaling from your mouth.

it really depends on whethor i am whistling, eating, chewing gum, drinking a soda, burping or what have you.

there are strangely enough many different combinations that depend on a lot of different factors.

When I breathe in my belly goes out. Does this mean I breathe with my belly?
 
both in and out through the mouth. i have chronic allergy or something that makes my nose stuffed. it's better now but the habit remains.

This Weight Training for Idiots book I have says to use both diaphragm and chest when exercising, since you get more air. I tried it when swimming, and I can go alot further under water if I use both.

of course you should use BOTH your diaphragm and chest when breathing. HOWEVER, the reason people tend to emphasis diaphragmatic breathing is because most people shallow breath, using only their chest and shoulders.

IF you breath properly from your diaphragm then you will also use the expansion in your chest.

You realize of course tho, that your diaphragm can expand a LOT more than your chest by itself right?

I think my dentist ask me out about this, if I was a mouth breater. The mouth can dryout faster and the bacteria have a better chance to grow...
 
Like others said, this is actually a good question.

I have allergies and my nose gets stuffy very often, so I breathe through my mouth. I am trying to remember to breathe through my nose, but at night, I don't dare to because I'm afraid I might get a stuffy nose and die...lol. But I WILL jolt awake if my nose gets stuffy right and can no longer breathe through it, right?
