I use a Mach 3 Power and love it. The vibration doesn't make the shave any closer, but it does make it less painful if you have a stiff beard (like me).

Does anyone notice that with anything more than 2 blades the blades get clogged easily and hard to remove by just swishing in water? I have to use an old toothbrush like 3 or 4 times to clear the blades while shaving with a Quattro or Mach III. Am I the only one?

While I found it hard to clear out the Quatro (although I wouldn't think of using a toothbrush...) the Mach 3 is easy to clear off with water.

its actually quite hard to cut yourself with the mach3. its an incredible shaver. haven't used an electric since it came out years ago...

the quattro is a joke, doesn't get close enough because of the alignment bands.

Guys, even if you decide to stick with over-priced multi-blade razors, do yourself and your face a favor a use some decent shave cream/soap and a brush. You'll be surprised at the difference!

PS... you can find excellent replacement double-edge razor blades for about 1.5 - 2 cents apiece in 100-pack on Fleabay. If you use 1 blade a week, that's almost 2 years worth of blades for under $20.

ooh i may have to give this a try.... nice post 🙂

btw, at first i thought you were talking about using a straight razor.... EEEEEK

We're livin' in the freaking 21st Century, dealing with machines that perform 4 billion operations a second and we're still using a freaking piece of metal to butcher our faces!

If our society is so hell bent on those "baby" faces, give us the damn lasers and permanent hair removal options for our faces, damnit!!!

grappa, thanks for the tip on where to buy double edged razor blades. My razor has been sitting in the drawer for a long time due to lack of blades. Either the big chains don't carry them, or their prices are ridiculously high ( to match the cartridge systems).

But I don't think I'm ready to pay the prices for the razors on the sites you linked. They must be made from precious metals to command those prices.

I agree with you on some of the razors. However, you can get an excellent double-edge (DE) safety - the Merkur Classic - for $25 there, which will cost you FAR less in the long run than any multi-blade razor + refills.

Not that I've seen... the synthetic brushes don't hold water so well. If you find a boar bristle brush, that will hold the water decently, though it's a little harsher than badger, it might be a good starter. 🙂

Trust me it is quite easy. My first time shaving with a Mach 3 I cut myself. My second time shaving I pressed too hard without moving hte razor and I saw 3 lines of blood above my lip...

I still cut myself once in a while although that's very rare... I can use both the M3 Power and Mach 3 Turbo with no trouble now...

I think 5 blades is a little bit intimidating... Watch... in 3 years they will come out with like "Gillette Diez" 10 blade razor

man up, you buncha nancy boys. this is the best safety razor you can get:

merkur classic

try it, you'll be smooth all day. and blades are about 50 cents each, and last at least two weeks. the only thing better than this is a straight razor.

i use a gillete sensor when travelling, and it's a POS. i can only get one shave out of it before the blade is too dull.

I used one of these...once. Friggin smooth shave...but I was accustomed to shaving with a little bit of sideways slop --- using a mach 3. I made a nice 3 inch x 1/2mm slice with this one...

and by the way

one hell of a brush, no?

In case someone already said it, my apologies: CVS (a large drug staore chain for the uninitiated) has the Fusion razor for $2.99 after a $6.00 rebate.

These things don't seem to be selling around here. Target, Wal-Mart, all the grocery stores, they all have had them for sale for a few days, but no one is buying. Either that or they restock the displays each time someone buys one...

8 cartridges for 25 bucks! I thought my Shick Quattro wiht 8 @ 15 bucks was expensive.

There is no way this shave is worth 10 bucks more than the quattro, I'll pass

grappa, thank you so much for that post. I got my Merkur Hefty classic razor in the mail yesterday with some violet shaving soap and a badger brush. It's without a doubt the best shave I've ever had in my life! No bumps, not a bit of razor burn, and the closest shave I've ever had. It took about 10 minutes to shave as it was my first time and I was a bit nervous. I didn't cut myself once either. The best part is that the blades are WAY cheaper than anything else out there, I got 10 good blades for $10 - they're doublesided AND they're supposed to last a week shaving daily. Thanks again!

I'm waiting for that new high power no-blade, nuclear powered, use it once and you're good for life(short as it may be) unit. The only problem they havn't worked out is how long the discarded units need to stay stuffed in the wall before it's safe to tear the house down.

yeah, you can get a cheap ($5) synthetic brush at wallyworld. i wouldn't recommend it for longterm use, but it'll be good to get an idea if you like it or not. you can also pick up some williams shave soap for about a buck. i still use my synthetic brush when i'm traveling, just to avoid possibly damaging/losing my badger brush.
