Steve was the heart and sole of Apple....Nuff said

Here's a quote from Bill Gates

I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.
The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely. "

RIP Steve.

And yeah, the launch was "off" Couldn't put my finger on it, but it makes sense now.

apple stocks might drop for now, but i have a feeling this guy will be a techie legend for decades to come. as long as apple keeps pushing limits and staying ahead of the style curve, people wont be able to stop the addiction.

RIP, because he was a great man.

well... looking back at the D5 interviews, it shows how much superior Steve Jobs was just in his presentation of himself, apple, and his respects to Microsoft. Bill Gates, though as "focused" as he is, just doesn't possess the same qualities when he talks with Steve.

It's clear that Bill was the Nerd, and Steve was the popular smart jock. One thing i can say, is that Steve Ballmer is really really annoying... Steve has some sort of soft humor, charisma, and definitely the leadership skills to patch a sinking boat.

But it's still evident that Jobs is a greedy SOB. Not one cent was donated to any charity, will the 'Gates' has donated over half of his personal wealth.

I'm sad to see that Steve Jobs has died, but I do hope that Apple dies.

I don't because we need more companies in the market to drive competition, not less. We also need companies that stop competing and start sueing.

Wow, he was in real bad shape then. He only officially stepped down weeks ago. Very sudden.

Not to be mean but I wonder if Apple's stock will drop tomorrow because of his death. Steve WAS Apple. Apple struggled until Steve came back and basically brought them back from the dead.

Keep in mind that while he only stepped down a few weeks ago, he's been on medical leave for a while and he's been mostly out of the public eye.

I do feel that, at least for the foreseeable future, Apple will be fine considering the management team that has been assembled. However, nothing can replace the vision that Steve Jobs had. Steve Jobs is something of an asshat, as Woz can attest to. Not trying to sound insensitive but he wasn't the nicest person in the world. But no one can say he didn't have a great feel for what works and what doesn't, which is probably his greatest strength.

Whatever one feels about Steve Jobs, one can't help but admire a man who went from being an unwanted baby, to building one of the most successful corporations in the world. His vision has touched every single computer user whether they use Apple products or not.

I actually felt very sad at hearing that Steve Jobs has passed away. This is a man whose vision has, IMHO, helped enriched all of our lives.

This is true. I am predicting apple will be creating crap until the vision is restored. Apple cube anyone?

Honestly, I'm not worried about Apple Inc. at all, especially when I learned they're recruiting from the hacker community.

Cook isn't the pitchman Jobs was, but they'll find another.

And who exactly do you think they would replace Tim Cook with?
Let's hope it's not Leo Apotheker.

I don't think the pitchman needs to be the CEO, Cook is a genius at massaging the supply line, and likely will do a fine job running Apple. He's pretty good at predicting consumers and the industry too.

Apotheker is a flipping nightmare...

Jobs is quite the salesman, and that is what makes him stand out compared to all the other CEO's. It seems to be successful in life, you better be good at sales! His work in Atari gave him enough traction to understand technology, though he has no interest in designing/making it.

And he did KILL all philanthropist efforts that Apple had, prior to his reinstatement of CEO. But he's much cooler than Bill Gates :)

I would like to ask posters to be respectful. A great man has passed away - one who has had a profound impact on the history of computing. Whether you like him or not, I prefer to think we are a civilized people. You can indicate your dislike of him, and comment any which way you please, but I ask that you be respectful. Crude comments will receive a warning.

I never owned any Apple computers but I've owned 2 iPod's, 1 iTouch and 2 iPhones. Apple computers were always more expensive than Wintel PC's so I've only owned PC's going back to the very first IBM PC (I worked at IBM at the time).

Aesthetics were and are of prime importance to Jobs and Apple and that, maybe even more than the functionality, was what made Apple in the last decade. At one time Sony was the name when you thought about consumer electronics but since the iPod Apple has taken over that position.

Love him or hate him Jobs did it his way and with absolute control!

You changed the way we listen to music, the way we use our smartphones, and the way we touch the tablet computer.

RIP Steve Jobs.

We talk about if it weren't for him... But the true genius behind Apple are the engineers. He just made sure it was up to snuff! But scrolling wouldn't have been possible without him!

So glad you said that here, it's not like there are other threads that would have been more appropriate.

There are a lot of really smart and talented people in the world who can solve actual specific problems.

Putting them together, ensuring that they don't get in each other's way, ensuring that the rest of the world -- which is on the side of entropy and stupidity! -- doesn't get in the way, and pointing them to an overall goal is a much, much harder thing.

RIP Steve. He truly changed mobile industry. Without the iPhone Android probably wouldn't exist. We would still be zipping along with WM, Palm, and BB. He will be remembered for a long long time.
