What is my mom and other non-technically inclined people going to do with the 16GB model that they can't already do with the 8GB model?

The apps on my mom's Nexus 4 are the same exact apps that I downloaded when I set her phone up in April. She has not bought a single "paid" app after I gave the phone to her. She has not installed a single "free" app after I gave the phone to her. She does not watch movies or listen to music on her phone.
What does she need all that space for when all she uses the phone for is Google Navigation, Google Talk, phone calls, texting, and Bluetooth(for talking hands free)?

Not everyone buying the 8GB model is buying it for themselves.

Does she have grandchildren?

I just had to get my MIL a big SDcard because she takes videos and pictures of the grandkids.

Not yet.
She complained about hitting the camera button several times by mistake last month. My solution was to just remove the Camera shortcut from both the quick launch bar and the home screen.

Even if she opened the camera app, I seriously doubt that she'll know how to operate it.

I'm curious...What does your mom do with those pictures and videos? Does she upload them to Facebook, YouTube, Dropbox, Google Drive, email, etc... by herself or does she just let it sit there permanently on her phone and SDcard?

ST does have at&t sims back. Good. I can attempt to cut the sim with a sim cutter (bought off amazon for under $5 including prime shipping) and if it fails I won't be hosed.

Hopefully the wife likes this phone. I'm going to hold out until the N5 comes out since I have a custom rom on my GN and really like the performance I get.

Well, as you say, she's not a techie. That means she'll probably grow into the phone and start using its other features eventually. Music, video, and pictures are basic features that'll eventually come in handy, not to mention apps that her friends may tell her about. You (or someone else) just have to tell her its potential. Point is, you don't buy the phone for today. You buy it for tomorrow. Storage is essential for that.

No idea why ST stopped selling the at&t cards, but they did. Speculation was that at&t was making a move to offer better prepaid so they started scaling back on the mvno's.
Alas, ST is selling the sims again.

As for the sim working in the N7...no idea. Also no idea on use with apple. I'm sure if the sims fits it should be doable.

I'm jsut happy that if I screw up cutting my wife's sim down to size I can order a new one.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use the AT&T ST SIM in there. The only problem would be with the APN settings, and you probably won't get LTE with that SIM, only HSPA.

Sorry for double posting, but what's a good screen protector/case for cheap?

Also, is it needed to have a protector on the back of the device?

Its my MIL, my mum can just about handle a dumbphone.

I've set her phone up so it uploads everything (photos and video) to Google+, every now and then she dumps her stuff onto the PC as well.

Is there a storage limit to Google+ photo uploads?

Yes its 1x 8gb partition. I guess it helps, but in general to me 8gb is no good. I'm not even one to put videos or music on my phone. Just apps and casual photo taking.

I get along ok with an 8gb Nexus 4. Apps are small and I don't use it for movies or big games.

Unlimited for 2048x2048 photos, but limited for full size. The limit is your Google Drive space. Since all your google storage space is now just a shared 15gb, that would be the limit for most people.

Hmm, I've got 115GB thanks to the Chromebook. Perhaps I will switch from Dropbox to Google+, though I just want it for storage not to share so maybe not.

They have already started over at Swappa with the comments and offering $150 for a used Nexus 4 since the new ones are so cheap. Hate to be selling one right now.

Offering and selling are not the same thing. Google will sell out of N4s and the used market won't change much.

But why wouldn't someone be okay with the lack of LTE? Aside from benchmarks and bragging rights, I mean. I tried out LTE on my N4 on T-Mobile and compared it with HSPA+.

Good reception:
HSPA+: 20 Mbit/s down, 3 up, 131ms latency
LTE: 19 down, 11 up, 50ms latency

Iffy reception:
HSPA+: 5.8 down, 1.7 up, 140ms latency
LTE: 6.9 down, 9.1 up, 194ms latency

LTE is faster, particular in the uplink, but the downlink speeds aren't all that different, and most importantly, it doesn't show in everyday use.

That depends where you live though. If you live in a smaller city in 'Murica, you get a lot worse coverage. And in big cities, there is spectrum shortage/crowdedness.

In my neck of woods, Sweden, I had HSPA+ on my previous phone but still only got about 7 mbit/s despite the phone being capable of getting more than 42 mbit/s. But the LTE network is really well-built and there's plenty of spectrum space, too, so on LTE you get 40-50 mbit/s even in rush hour and on crowded buses. I've been using my friend's old S3 LTE version when he got his S4 and getting a LTE N5 would be awesome.

But I'd agree with you that if that's your average experience, then LTE makes less sense. Although the spectrum shortage in 'Murica is about to get less severe.

8 gigabyte is still very tiny, however. The Nexus 5 should come with 16 gigabyte minimum and a 5", 1080p screen. LTE will be a safeguard for the future, at least for those of us who live in places where LTE actually makes a significant difference from HSPA+.

Unlimited storage on 1080 video below 15mins as well.

Used market will definitely change. Maybe Google will sell the Nexus 4 out, but buyers won't pay the amount of money they were willing to pay before this. Especially in a place like Swappa where trades are mostly between phone enthusiasts who know the situation well. And I'm not just talking about a used Nexus 4, the prices for other used phones that are comparable will go down as well.

Now that is a compelling reason to switch!

I have to clarify that thats stuff from your camera not film clips and the like.

Its pretty good though, most of my home video stuff is in clips shorter than 15mins. I just wish that my upload speed was better.

Oh I'll still use Dropbox for my TV Shows and whatnot, but recorded 1080P video takes up a lot of space so having it free with G+ is pretty nice.

Its not the easiest way to go, but I like the dbrand vinyl skin on the back with the bumper case. It protects the back and the edges, looks good, and doesn't add as much bulk as a case would.

I have one of these full body protectors on my S4. For $2 you can't go wrong.

Use the coupon code XtremeSALE for 80% off during checkout.

Watch the video on how to apply it, it is not one of the regular sticky screen protectors. It is a wet application one.

I've been trying not to replace my Galaxy Nexus until the new Nexus is out, but this does seem like a great deal.
