This cant be good:

U.S. official: North Korea says it is considering declaring itself a nuclear nation, contemplating testing. Details soon.

Edit: just saw this on the top of cnn's page

I smell a war.

Here's hoping some sane person in NK realizes what Kim is about to do and puts a bullet in his head. NK would be having better luck obtaining some kind of agreement if they hadn't already proved to the world international agreements mean jack sh!t to them. While I feel for the residents of Seoul, the NK 'government' needs to go, preferably with a loud bang.

Yep, more blackmail as usual. I think NK is on the way to finding out why it isn't a good idea to try and push around a global megapower. This isn't about NK facing aggression, the only aggressive one here is them! Kim is just trying to secure his own lavish lifestyle and social prominence, at the expense of his countrymen's lives. It's disgusting.

Tell me (and I am serious here) what will the global megapower do?

My answer: Nothing

what's yours?

Probably more than nothing. We are not in the position to do anything until we get some of out troops out of the middle east. However we can stop feeding them and put up a naval blockade...

headline from fark

1. That won't happen for many years.
2. Goodbye South Korea...

"Nothing" is probably the best thing to do as far as NK goes. I have yet to hear a better proposal.

1. Is probably going to happen alot sooner than many think.

Assertion 1 is probably fair since our military resources are a bit tied up atm. 2 is ludicrous though. It takes more than 4 or 5 nukes to take out an entire country. Especially in NK's stage of development.

Gotta remember the NK-speak doesn't always mean what it sounds like.

The positive view is that perhaps "declaring" the weapons means they are finally going to stop dancing and put the weapons program on the table as a negotiating item. In the past they have always left a way out of the negotiations by saying "but we don't really have weapons".

I believe the US has the leverage. the only reason this is happening is because kim wants to stay in power and not get nuked. He knows his couple bombs will be no match for the 5000+ US nuke arsenal. i rather we deal with a current Nk then one several years later with a dozen or more nukes, a reliable guidance system, and bigger demands. and if Nk does stay with nukes china better be ready to accept a nuclear japan,SK,taiwan(possibly), and india, pakistan, russia, who already have them.

If the North Koreans want to push us to the limit, South Korea (and maybe Japan) will take a lot of beating before the North's regime becomes a footnote to history. In that respect, everyone would've failed. Tens of millions may die. But it's just something that had to be done.

Uh huh, and I wonder if you would think the same way if the Korean Peninsula was right next to the US

I have lived in Korea for a long time and I know the geopolitics there. I am sorry but a war is VERY unlikely and will never happen.

Consider, if a war breaks out BOTH SIDES HAVE TOO MUCH LOSE. Not to mention:

1. China will intervene.
2. US and UN will intervene.

And you know what happens then.

War will never happen.

I hope you are right, but, frankly, your post sounds like wishful thinking rather than fact-based opinion.
