Montreal dropped from F1 schedule

Canadian Press

[/b]Montreal[/b] ? Montreal's Formula One Grand Prix has been dropped from the 2004 schedule because of the impact of federal anti-tobacco legislation, a race organizer announced Thursday.

Normand Legault said he received the news in a letter from Formula One organizers.

The legislation was announced in 1997 and Legault told a news conference the Montreal race has had a seven-year grace period before tobacco sponsors had to be dropped. Legault said organizers made their decision based on the legislation.

"It was basically made in light of the Oct. 1 application of Canada and Quebec's anti-tobacco legislation," he told a news conference.

"So basically what that means for next June's event is that Michael Schumacher's Ferrari could not sport Marlboro's colours and Jacques Villeneuve's car could not have Lucky Strike on it."

He said the decision will hurt the city because the weekend event in June has drawn crowds of more than 300,000.

"There's an important economic impact," Legault said. "There will be an important negative impact on Montreal's tourism."

Bill Hurley, owner of Hurley's Irish Pub, a popular downtown drinking establishment, said not having a race "certainly is going to be a blow to Montreal."

"I think it's a terrible decision," Hurley said in an interview.

"Formula One week and weekend is our busiest week and weekend in the summer months. Being an Irish pub, we're busy more in the winter, fall and spring but we always look forward to Formula One.

"Not only that, the people who come up here are great, and every year we look forward to seeing the same folks who have been coming up for the years it's been here.

"They come up for the Grand Prix. The Grand Prix has a large following, usually of people with quite a large disposable income.

"But, obviously, if there's no Grand Prix, they won't be coming up. It really would be a shame."

LAME LAME LAME LAME LAME

If there ever was a reason to vote out our current Liberal government, here it is. Just because they won't make an amendment to our stupid anti-tobacco advertising legislation, Montreal has lost their biggest event of the year, and one of the best races around.

I am so pissed right now, words can't even describe it. :|

There's other GPs that id like them drop instead of Canada... they're moving GPs to other countries that don't have anti-tobacco laws. Belgium is back next year though... so i'm guessing Canada was the one they took off since the teams did not want 18 races a year.

<--- gilles villeneuve fan... 🙁

I've been there and walked across that entire track on many ocassions...nice view infront of the casino...

Dumb canadiens...sorry ..DUMB FING QUEBEQOIS.....Dumb fools are even going to tear the Stadium town....:|

"Canadian GP will be on June 6th, with USGP June 20th". This was confirmed by Bernie Ecclestone, who apparently, was miffed that this erroneous rumour surfaced in the first place.

edit- I only read that at another motorsport forum. may or may not be true.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA????

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

I had to miss the Montreal GP his summer and was planning to go next summer! Started saving up to!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Hopefully something will happen and Bernie will change his mind.

:Q:| :| :| :| :|

Canadians thought they could have their cake and eat it too, eh? Thought they could spit at the tobacco companies and take their money at the same time, did they?
Sorry to hear that you had to learn the hard way that life just doesn't work like that...

instead of Buffalo 0-4-4 😉

Next track doesn't suit his car nor his tires... i feel good about the last race at Suzuka though so if he goes in there with a lead... id put my money on him.

Ok... now Bernie Ecclestone says that the calendar hasnt even been finalized yet but he didn't say that Canada is on there too. 😕

What about Toronto's Molson Indy/Mosport? I know its a different sport...but didn't Benson & Hedges sponsor that? Is the Indy still on??

I have no idea what is sure in that sport anymore... apparently CART has no money for next season... 😕 there's two different tracks for Molson Indy... and they don't run in this one though... IIRC only sportscars and motorcycles run Mosport... thats too bad though... thats a pretty cool track. 🙂

F1 was given 7 years to adjust to these tobacco laws, they didn't. It should be noted that Britain and France also have similar laws, but F1 still races there due to a much larger fanbase(helps offset the cost of lost sponsor revenues).

Actually F1 has until 2006 before tobacco is completely banned... Canada had anti-tobacco laws that are effective October 2003... Belgium was removed from this years calendar because they imposed the ban early... unlike the rest of the UK. But they are supposedly back next year because they will follow suit with the 2006 plan. There has been no confirmation whethere Canada is either on or off... but Bernie Ecclestone will move the majority of F1 out of Europe if that's what it takes. Ferrari is sponsored by Marlboro and McLaren is sponsored by West... i doubt they will have any trouble finding a non-tobacco sponsor.
