CNN reports breaking news that Iraqi sovereignty was handed over today.

This means that there will now be peace in Iraq now! Or not! ;)

yay, and peace breaks our and our sons stop dying............. un huh, sure, yup.....

the whole idea of sovereignty being handed over is just a political smokescreen to begin with. i don't think i need to explain the last 3 years of lies, as it's been done and was obvious to begin with.

This changes the geopolitical landscape. A while ago, Pakistan unofficially pledged troops after the handover.

And any horrendous actions done by the insurgents/terrorists will be against Iraq and its guests, instead of the US as an occupier.

Additionally, NATO has already delivered 30k units of body armor for Iraqi forces.

Yes, this makes it politically softer to support murder for oil. That and every country involved has been blackmailed with cheap oil. So quick, everyone jump in the ole bush bandwagon before they hog all the oil for air force one.

You're completely right. The UN Oil for Food scandal was terrible. Russia and France were blackmailed. The program allowed Saddam selling oil below market value, bribing individuals, and then using the profits to build palaces and prisons. Now 30,000 children don't have to die annually because of that bungled program.

But seriously, if you think that this war was brought on for strictly oil reasons, you're wrong. Besides, it would have been easier/cheaper to invade Venezuela for 'cheap oil'. But Bush 'want's the 'democratically elected' leftist marxist in power there. War brings instability in the markets, economic growth

I suggest you read some Iraqi blog sites.

this doesn't make a whole lot of sense... has GWB condescended to explain to mere mortals what he's trying to achieve??

I wonder if the Iraqi government will have control of its country or will it be an US puppet. If it is real, I hope Iraq can come out of chaos without a bloody revolution.

nato will provide military training to the new iraqi forces. they will continue to maintain their troop presence in the country. currently, 18 of the 26 nato states have troops there, numbering 26,000+.

better news, though, is the growing willingness among non-european states to send (more) aid,
including military, to help ensure a successful transition and to stamp out those 'insurgent' cockroaches.

I assume they did this out of a desire to prevent the turnover date from being a major focal point/target for terrorists. You'll note that Bremer has already been flown out of Iraq. I tend to think this was a smart tactic, other things being equal.

Some of you people are real pieces of work...you moan and cry in here all the time about getting out of Iraq and letting the Iraqis run Iraq....Today the handover happens EARLIER than scheduled when many of you same crybabies were saying it would be delayed and/or never happen. Do you ever get tired of living the dreary lives you have carved out for yourselves? This is good news....first step in truly creating a new democratic Iraq and still yet all you can do is spin it in a way as to find bad in it. You people that do this make me sick......

conducting a war on lies will usually get people fired up, don't you think?

That said, if this in any way improves the situation in Iraq, I'm all for it.

Oh, and Shiner, you probably don't want to be quoting Heartsurgeon, he of the blind faith, in your sig...he is rowing without all of his oars in the water...

In the perverse environment of ATP&N, where partisan vitriol is the only hard currency, trolls like heartsurgeon take on the status of rock stars. FWIW, shinerburke is a bright guy; IMO heartsurgeon, on the other hand, contributes a lot of heat but no light.

And you? You whine every time someone doesn't see things exactly as you do. By now I would think you'd have figured out that people's opinions are divided regarding Iraq; but no, you have to harangue and insult anyone who doesn't share your little perceptions of the world. I now ask you the same question...Don't you ever get tired of everyone being so wrong and unlike you in their oipinions? Give it a rest, learn to respect, or at least accept others' opinions and maybe you won't be so sick all the time.

People can have their own opinions....never have I said they could not. What I am saying is that it sickens me to see people trying to spin the turnover of Iraq to Iraqis as a bad thing. It's a step forward. Regardless of how they feel about the war they should acknowledge that this is a good thing. Instead many come in here and start spewing venom.

The main reason I'm quoting HS is in protest to his post being erased. I've seen much worse stay on here much longer....yet....kablooey......his was gone. I also happen to think what he said is dead on accurate regarding SOME people in this forum.

It is true that there is blindness on both sides.....but since this area seems to be dominated more by the left these days that is the blindness that raises it's ugly head more often.
