WOW. I am absolutely amazed that yet ANOTHER multiple fatality accident happened here. The history channel show that I saw reported that that paper factory emissions were contributing to the fog in a major way, but because of some political reasons they were not forced to stop....And now just over a decade later there is yet another acccident there. jeez, that plant needs to be SHUT DOWN if that is contributing factor in this case. >>

The paper factory is not the reason this happened. The asshole drivers who refuse to slow down for unsafe conditions are what caused this. When we had some bad forest fires here a while back and they closed I-4 for unsafe after it was reopened and still had poor visibility the Highway Patrol was clocking people at 85 in a 65. People just don't care.
 
My god, the news story says "Heavy fog is to blame". Wtf? Yeah, I'm sure the fog just maliciously slammed those cars into each other, eh? It should say "DUMBASS MOTORISTS to blame". This accident was 100% operator error. If visibility is low, SLOW DOWN or DON'T DRIVE AT ALL!!! Darwin must be getting fed up with having to hand out so many awards...

haha and they actually think that a "fog detection system" is going to help any with dumbass motorists who apparently can't tell when it's foggy or not?

doesn't always work that way ... 🙁 Usually people will try to squeeze in if you leave larger gap between cars... Especially on highways and interstates.
 
I live not to far away from this, the paper factory is Bowater , they are notirous for making fog, back a couple years ago there was another pile up that killed a lot of people on the count of the fog too.

Also the fog is so bad you can't see and people for some reason will stop and pull over and slow down, etc thats what causes the crashes.

Im still not convinced that the paper factory didnt have anything to do with this, but...I wanted to share an interesting tidbit I saw on tv.

Visibility was only 10 feet. not much reaction time!
 
I've driven through there quite a bit as well and its definitely pretty bad at times. That's what's especially dangerous about fog, it'll seem harmless but get dangerous VERY VERY quickly. I remember when Mobile, AL had a 100+ car pileup a couple years ago due to fog out on the bay bridge. I'd driven through there only 15 minutes before it happened and it was VERY scary to drive through. You could see it coming from far off, but once you get deep into it there was absolutely NO visibility. You could barely see over the end of your bumper Yet people continue to plow along at 75+mph as if it's no big deal.
 
It doesn't matter how safe you drive, the fact is, in an accident like this, its the semi-truck(s) behind you that determine things. The only way to lessen the accident is to perhaps designate a "truck only" lane for truckers when visibility is low. A heavy truck hitting a Ford Explorer is like a Suburban hitting a motorcyle, not a good matchup.
 
WOAH! i cannot believe all of those trucks in the middle lane!!

In michigan, its extremely rare to see a truck in the 2nd lane form the right on a 4 lane freeway, let alone a 3 lane!!

They drive wherever the hell they want to down here. I almost get run off the road at least once or twice by those coked-up assholes every time I drive from Atlanta to NC to see the in-laws. I-85, 75, and 95 are all major shipping routes so therefore always chock-full of idiot truckers. Joy.

I remember that stretch of highway had a LOT of semis on it. The pictures confirm that.

They REALLY need a semi-only lane. Super HOV, or something like that. 😱

I'm pretty sure this isn't the same place as the HUGE pileup years ago. That was about 20 miles northeast of Chattanooga up 75. It's was in Calhoun, TN, which is right next to the paper plant. If that paper plant was to blame, it's a good 30 miles up river from Chattanooga if I'm not mistaken. I'm surprised the accident wasn't bigger or more widespread.
 
Visibility went to zero people said. They could not even see the front of their own vehicles. There was a Trooper writing up ticket a half a mile a way and he was powerless to do anything. Loss of life in cars may have been reduced if semi-trucks were not allowed in the left lanes as they are here. It is horrible when they take up both left lanes and side by side. That should be illegal here but it is not. I see many truckers do it on purpose now. Years ago truckers used to be the best skilled and most respectful drivers on the road, now they are the worst.

well like I said im not from the area but foxnews said it was 5 miles from the previous incidents.
 
Damn. Did anybody see that big tanker in the mess of all that? I'm not sure whats in it; could be milk for all I know.. but it's a good thing it didn't get turned over and broke open, lol..
 
Wait, truckers are allowed in lanes other than the 2 lanes farthest to the right???? WHY??? In California they're limited to 55mph and they have to drive in the 2 right lanes.

You're right about that, in the few times I've driven between Chattanooga and Atlanta, they drive like complete maniacs. 75-80 generally is about my upper limit for interstate driving. Once I pulled into the middle lane to pass a string of cars going 70, and before I knew it, there's a semi going at least 90 in my rearview mirror. He got so close to my rear end that I wonder if he could see my car at all. Scared the sh!t out of me...
 
Atleast the parts for my truck will only be delayed a short time. That truck looks ok to me 🙂

Years ago I remember a teacher saying out around Buffalo, NY during a white out snowstorm you don't stop and you don't slow down. If you do someone will rear end you.
Kind of scary going 65mph in a bad blizzard.
