*BREAKING NEWS: HP Declares HP-CPQ Merger Will Be Approved!*

I cant decide if I want the CPQ/HWP merger to go through... I live in Houston so if it did go through, we'd lose a big company to Cali... but if it doesnt go through... we may still lose it... Plus, they have too many overlapping product lines... its going to be tough to work that out. Anyway, only time will tell... the only thing I hope is that they dont bomb (either together or apart) and go out of business... my worst and most horrible dream would be to be left w/ only Dell...

"Dude there's no way in hell I'd get a Dell"...

Well, Carly Fiorina stands to make something like 100 million if the merger happens... meanwhile thousands of workers will lose their jobs as they are elminated for duplicate effort.

I'm not a shareholder, but I hope it works out for them. A lot of people are gonna get axxed, however economies of scale should be better, and shareholders SHOULD benefit, if the two companies get some synergy and are able to integrate effectivly.

As Walter Hewlett has said, the result is too close to call and it's premature to say anything at this point. The margin is under 2%. I guess we'll know in a couple of weeks. I really hope that the merger doesn't happen.

I too think that this merger would not be in the best interest of either company or society in general. Lets hope cooler heads prevail and both companies see the folly of this persuit.

Yeah, it pretty much seems like it's going to be another Bush/Gore vote counting thing...

I'm from Houston as well--I would hate to see a big company like Compaq basically go away. I think they would actually keep some of their operations in H-town... but it's just not the same. Compaq execs seem to want the deal to happen... a lot of people will lose their jobs--good thing I switched majors from Computer Science to History so that I can get a job (wait... I still can't get a job).

mike dell to carly fiorina: i will eat your children! praise to allah!

oh... wait... that was mike tyson... my bad... i knew i had something wrong.

I didn't really care about this issue until I bought my Jornada. On the one hand, they can really learn a lesson from Compaq about dust prevention. On the other hand, it's superior to the Ipaq in every other case and I would hate to see the design killed to favor the more popular brand name.

<< it's superior to the Ipaq in every other case >>

Really? How so? I really don't keep up with PocketPCs much, but it was my understanding that the iPaqs were the best things out there.

Holly...., SH*T!..... I never in my right mind thought *ANYTHING* was going to come of this. This is indeed a *HUGE* merge, and by no means dose it mimic that whole Packerd Bell/Nec deal. For one thing, packerd bell NEVER made buisness servers in mass quantities, nor did nec, so that pretty much cut's a whole market out of the picture. Compaq and HP both have a good grip on the server market of things, and also in the consumer PC market. This will prove to make one *SERIOUSLY* powerfull company. Any word on layoffs?.

PS: I was really hoping this wouldn't go through, it's bound to put people and companys out of work and buisness

If the deal goes through, I think HPaq will go down the drain.

Aside from butloads of bonuses for some people like Fiona, I just dont see what they're hoping to get by making this merge.

just heard the news myself a few minutes ago. i can tell you from first-hand experience that a merger is gonna mean lost jobs, reshuffling of people, etc. etc. (i'm going thru it right now where i work). i think it's gonna be like the irresistable force meeting the immovable object.
