New York Baseball Icon David Cone Retires

NEW YORK -- David Cone retired Friday, cutting short his comeback with the New York Mets and calling it a career at age 40.

"This is the end, for sure," the pitcher said at Shea Stadium.

To take his place on the roster, the Mets activated 42-year-old reliever John Franco from the disabled list. He had been sidelined since the 2001 season by elbow surgery.


"One of the old expressions in baseball is, 'It's time to get out of the game and give the young guys a chance,"' Cone said, joking.

Cone was 1-3 with a 6.50 ERA in five games this season, four of them starts. He made his final appearance Wednesday in Philadelphia, giving up one run in two innings of relief.

It's good he retired, he was getting lit up like a christmas tree out there! It's sad, but no one can pitch at that level forever... definite Hall of Famer though, so he'll be alright

Yay, a 40 yr. old retires and a 42 yr. old is activated. I'm glad I didn't buy an 8-pack of tickets for Mets games this year, like I did last year.

he had some great years, but he's no clemens and should've retired 3 years ago, before he completely sucked.
