Him and Gary Payton are basically trying to buy themselves a championship. Very cheap, I hope they realize that. This isn't them winning a title as a Great player, with their respective teams, this is them trying to make a dream team to get a title that they could never win for themselves.

GG Fakers.

Although I understand what you are saying, no player has ever won a title by himself. It is a team effort, always has been, always will be. The Mailman and GP are winners that have never been surrounded by other guys with the talent and drive to win a championship. Here, they sacrificed money to get a chance at the ring.

They haven't bought themselves a championship, much like LA hasn't. They still have to work for it. I don't think this dimisnishes their status as future HOFers at all, in fact it might raise it as they actualy took lower pay.

Lakers looking good. But how do they afford it?

Payton = Mid-level exception ~4.5mil

Malone = low-level exception ~1.5mil

amish

how much could each of them have gotten otherwise?

Although nothing is known for sure, Malone probably could have gotten at least 5million for a few years and there was talk of Payton getting something like 7-8 million offers from teams.

so that's a pretty big cut for malone. is it possible these guys are getting some other sort of compensation (side deal, promise of better deal in future?), or is it all just for a championship ring.

My sentiments exactly. They both sacrificed a lot of money to get a guaranteed championship ring. Sure they'll be happy to get a ring, but it won't add anything to their legacy. People will remember that they got this, not by taking their own teams to the championship, but by signing on as the 3rd and 4th options on a team that was already championship level just by having Shaq and Kobe. Now i'm hoping that the Spurs get Kidd and O'neal or Mourning so the Lakers can at least have competition.

So, does anyone want to place bets on the possibility of them winning 70. Of course that depends on Shaq not sitting on his fat a$$ all summer, and Kobe not sitting this season out in jail.

i hate that god damn team.

I hear that but, they will now be unstoppable, unless some team gets a twin tower comb like the spurs had.

I will bold my actual comment "This isn't them winning a title as a Great player, with their respective teams" Respective Teams. I said they were great players who shouldn't try to buy their own championship, which (in personal opinion) is what they are doing.

Remember the Sonics went to the finals. Also remember that the Jazz went to the finals also, but both of them were turned down by Michael Jordan. So i guess the real point is they couldn't win against the best in their prime, so now they are older and trying to buy a championship they couldn't rightfully earn.

No disrespect to either players overall career, but this is just kinda an astrict in my book. *

Playing in the biggest(or was it 2nd biggest) market, media exposure for the traveling all-stars and the endorsement opportunities that come with it, along with the bonus checks they get for winning a championship should help a little bit.

I think they have a chance to make history here....

like the Wilt Chamberlin/Jerry West/Elgin Baylor Lakers, Kareem/Magic/James Worthy Showtime Lakers, or the Bill Russell/Bob Cousy/Bill Sharman/Sam Jones/John Havlicek Celtics. 🙂

I just hope this isn't Houston Part 2. Remember when they bought all the old players and tried to win. They didn't fare too well. Somehow I think the Lakers will do better. Maybe Phil has his eyes set on the total season win mark. Maybe he wants an 82-0 season. Or maybe he realizes that Shaq's too big to play 100 games in a year and they need someone to pick up the slack. Fox only showing up once a month last year hurt the Lakers greatly. I don't see it being an issue now.

Another thing to consider...these are older guys. Malone would probably rather play under Jackson than most other coaches. Jackson's laid back approach is probably quite appealing for veterans just looking to win a title. Do your job and Jackson will leave you alone...plain and simple.

That was a little bit different. We added Pippen and Barkley, and the chemistry was just not there. Not only that, there was a strike shortened season that shortened the down time between games.

The Lakers are a different situation. They still are among the best in the West. Adding the Mailman and the Glove to an already potent lineup, while not giving up depth makes them unstoppable - as long as Shaq is healthy.

The problem is that weakness at the 3... When you have Shaq, Malone, Kobe, and Payton, do you really need a 5th player? 😉

Yeah, there are always risks.
Shaq wanted another player to pick up the slack. He talked with Malone to join him someday during last year's all star game. It'll be hard for teams to triple team him with Payton and Malone being open to hit the easy jumpers. 🙂

I agree - but I think there needs to be more. I'm just not sure that is out there. Signing Kidd and Jermaine O'Neal would do it, but all signs point to O'Neal re-upping with Pacers.

Yep O'neal broke off meetings with the Spurs and 1 other team to go back to Indiana to put a deal together. It's a shame
