Bill Clinton ego and status as a former President makes him problematic as Sec of State. He should be given a special portfolio-maybe solve the Middle East with Tony Blair, or help speed up the negotiations to speed us out of Iraq.

I like both Daschle and Richardson.

I saw a bit on very early morning TV with Hillary. I didn'thear the question but Hillary was talking about binging back good relations with other countires so apparently she is interested?

Well, all that Bosnian sniper fire she was up against makes her qualified...

Seriously though, I think Hillary is better than the other major options. Kerry? Richardson?. But thats not saying much. I prefer Hagel myself.

The problem with the Bush Administration wasn't that the SoS position was staffed by a total incompetent or a "Washington insider," it was that Bush allowed Cheney to set his pet ideological attack dogs against the State, and encouraged intra-factionalism from the Pentagon, because of his irrational ideological hang ups.

The reason that Bush's second term was a significant improvement foreign policy-wise can be traced directly to the lessening of this pernicious influence, with Rumsfeld removed, Bolton gone from State and the U.N., etc., and Gates and Rice allowed to operate without their hands tied.

I might personally prefer a career diplomat rather than a politician but Hillary is certainly "likeable enough." However, after watching her run her campaign. She exhibited virtually no ability to think on her feet, to make adjustments when things went awry, and to stick with a game plan that clearly wasn't working because she couldn't seem to think of or choose an effective alternative. Hilary is still polarizing and not as well known abroad. Her spot is in the senate. With Byrd stepping back/down due to age and Kennedy seriously ill, her stature as party leader will increase. She's more visible already than many more senior senators.

No, I'm not hot on any of those. Hillary might be a good choice initially, as she and Bill could go a ways towards restoring goodwill toward the US in the international community, but I thing that eventually she would substitute her judgment for Obama's. At which time he could replace her after having more time to search.

I'm a little surprised Colin Powell's name has not come up. He has more experience than the other three.

he is not interested in public office iirc

Nicely stated.

I don't remember how Bill came up as an option in this thread, but that seems like a bad idea to me. Bill would be extremely useful to the new admin for special assignments, like the Kashmir thing or whatever else. Putting him into a regular role just doesn't make any sense to me - you don't give a superstar a regular position; you allow them to go around being a superstar. That'll stroke his ego and hopefully bring some positive results.

Hillary for Senate Majority Leader.
Bill should run for House in 2010 and be made Speaker.

Good.. doesn't get nearly enough attention. Much more important than Israel/Palestine IMO.

Although I think she would be a good choice for SoS, I see no reason why she would choose that over her senate position. She is more powerful as a senator, and might be eyeing Senate Majority Leader...

In the Senate you still have to deal with 99 other wanna-be presidents who get to up or down you. SoS can act more unilaterally and only really has to answer to one person...

If she stayed in the Senate she probably could rise in prominence, she did do rather well in the primaries after all. And Reid is not my idea of a strong willed person. Guy looks ready to feint every time he's on tv.

Like Palin, Hillary should fade into the woodwork and never come out again...

The Clinton/Bush Era must end!

I voted for Obama to see real change in the way our government does business; not to see the same old slimy douchebags continue to run the show, just with different titles!

Fuck Hillary Clinton and the scumbag ex-President she rode in on.

She might be eyeing the position, but that's about it. Positions like that are held for people with the most seniority.

I think many overestimate HRC's ability to wield power in the senate. She's just the junior senator from her state and has far far less seniority than many many others.

Those people have ego's every bit as large as hers and aren't just gonna step out of her way etc.

Trying to shove off the inevitable 2012 primary run after Obama's failed Carterish Presidency. Preemptive strike.
