I'm in management, and I have found that we're the "everything else" people.
For example: the heavy equipment operators operate heavy equipment. The managers do everything else. We do everything else so that the heavy equipment operators don't have to stop operating heavy equipment. We get the correct permits, the right equipment, the necessary supplies, develop beneficial relationships with other departments, handle customer complaints, etc etc.
My role, as asistant manager, has been also compared to camp counselor. I'm the person that most everyone will come to and vent or chat or express their ideas.
06:15 get up
06:20 run bath water - read
http://www.andrewtobias.com/ while waiting for bath to fill up.
07:00 done with bathroom stuff, so I read tech news on
news.com, watching for bits about the SCO Group lawsuit against IBM
07:25 Leave for work
07:45 arrive for work - chat with my right hand man in the hazmat building and the litter patrol kid that has an Alienware and bought Far Cry on my recommendation
08:00 check email, read my whiteboard notes, look at the papers on my desk to figure out priorities
[generally a bunch of work related stuff happens, answer a lot of questions about hazardous waste, work on writing invitations for bids or request for quotes, check progress on ongoing contractual services, keep my head down so my boss doesn't pester me.... ]
When I have some down time, I visit:

12:00 I usually go out for lunch, even though that is a horrible financial and often terrible dietary decision. I just can't stand staying at work during that hour
13:00 after lunch, my right hand man and I usually make some plans for improving our lot in life... or at least at work...
14:00 If at this point, I have gotten some significant things accomplished for the day, I typically slow down. If I haven't, I stay the course until quitting time.
17:00 Even though it's quitting time, I typically stay a little late, then leave around 17:20
On Wednesday nights, I go the a volunteer hazardous materials response team meeting until 20:30 or so.
