Another ditto. I've always assumed that they assume you're getting a meal - the bread is part of the meal.

*however, I CAN see charging for the bread if you indicate you're there for dinner, then change your mind and have a couple cups of coffee and eat the bread.

I have never been given free rice at a Chinese restaurant in my life.

However I have been given free nachos at Mexican restaurants. But that is pretty rare.
Yep, I've had the free nachos at Mexican restaurants, free bread at general sit-down restaurants, free peanuts at Five Guys or Texas Roadhouse, free fortune cookies at Chinese restaurants, but never free rice at Asian restaurants. Maybe he means the fact that every plate comes with rice on the side whether you ordered it or not?

For example:
"I'd like the Sesame Chicken."
"Steamed or fried rice?"
"None thanks."
"You sure? It comes with the meal."

To me, that means it comes with the COST of the meal you ordered, especially because you only get it with the order. Unlike table bread, you get it even with take-out or delivery. Also, it's not really worth mentioning except that some people seem to be talking about them: of course you get all the rice you want at a buffet.

I have yet to be charged for bread I didn't ask for.

It is deceptive to place something on the table without asking and then charge you for it. If you went to the grocery store and the cashier slipped something into your bag without asking and charged you for it, would you mind? Hell, even if you wanted that item you would feel deceived.
What if you were given the bill at a chinese restaurant and found you were charged for the fortune cookies they brought you at the end of the meal without asking you?

I wouldn't mind paying if it is good bread and I actually fucking ordered it, but I want to be told there is a charge.

As said earlier its pretty common in a lot of Europe.

Also to charge for the little dishes of olives and cheese.

On the other hand they give you a free snack with your drink sometimes. :)

I believe most places will eventually start doing this when your party finishes the bread and asks for more. Once expectations accept that, they will start charging for the bread in the first place.

Never experienced this... what happens if you don't touch the bread at all, do they still charge you?

Chips with a side of salsa is not nachos. It is an outrage, an OUTRAGE, that you consider that nachos.

I love chips and salsa.

Also, I agree with you on the bread thing. If they bring it without you asking for it, it should be free. Keep fighting the good fight.

And finally, sorry I blew up about the nachos thing.

On second thought, why bread?

If you go to a Chinese restaurant they don't give you free rice.

Why do white people expect free bread?

every single time i've ever ordered chinese food carryout or delivery, there is ALWAYS free white rice in there, and i ALWAYS end up throwing it out because i order fried rice.

i've eaten at a lot of restaurants in my days, both in america and outside, and never once been charged for bread.

if any of you have a costal flats near you, the free bread they give you is the best i've ever had.

Except that you just as often get chips with liquid cheese, therefore: nachos.

A local Mexican restaurant here gives you both the melted queso and salsa with the chips. With every group I've eaten with there the delicious warm white liquid cheese is always consumed and replaced multiple times while we finish with the same bowl of salsa we started with.

Sneaking in an extra charge for bread is just a douchey thing for a restaurant to do. It won't make your diners feel comfortable or welcome, just taken advantage of.

Look at how many people will eat at a crappy restaurant like Olive Garden just because they serve unlimited breadsticks with every meal. Whoever runs Olive Garden at least understands that success in the restaurant business is all about taking caking good care of your customers.

I have no problem with a restaurant charging for bread but if they put anything on my table for me to eat without asking if I want it AND making it clear there is a charge for it, then I am not paying for it.

This is no different than if they started charging for each glass of water they serve.

Where in the bible does it define what nachos are?

Nachos are just tortilla chips with some kind of thing to go with them (either salsa guac or queso). If you think otherwise then you must have some magic bible defining what everything is.

No. That's chips and cheese. NOT NACHOS.

I love chips and cheese even more than I love chips and salsa, but it isn't nachos. Not in the restaurant sense.

I really have no idea why I'm arguing, I don't really care and I'm probably wrong.

It's in the King Jme5343 version, look it up you heathen! To be true nachos, the sauce has to be ON the chips, and is typically accompanied by other toppings; onions, jalapenos, black olives, beef, chicken or pork.

Chinese restaurants usually give free tea and those fried cracker things.

err - I have never been to a restaurant that brings bread to the table and then charges you for it. Whether we're talking cheap or more upscale, if they are bringing you something that is not a menu item you specifically asked for, you should not be getting charged for it. No way would I pay for something I didn't ask for that they took it upon themselves to put on the table.
this.

First Chinese BBQ restaurants are awesome.

Word. The only one I've been to is the one in Arlington (it is awesome). There's a closer one in Haltom (I live in north Fort Worth), but the rest are all in the Dallas area so I probably won't go to any of them. Maybe one day though :D

I've only seen this happen in southern European countries. It's normal there. Anywhere else I would have an issue with it.

Nothing is "free" But, many things do not go "extra" ...

Most of the mexican places will serve chips and salsa ... they do not charge you extra itemized expenses of "chips and salsa", usually they just take the chips and salsa into account and build it into the price of their menu. I would assume reasturants that serve baskets with bread do the same.

I've had it happen with tea at both Chinese and Japaneses restaurants. They put it on your table without asking, then it shows up on the bill. Not sure I've ever seen it happen with bread; it certainly hasn't happened to me recently, that's for sure.
