I have to share this with entire world, I AM GOING TO BRASIL! So, yeah, I am pretty excited I started packing yesterday (actually making a list) and then I realised I don't have luggage!

I am asking you for help, I need good quality luggage, which will hold my stuff and last more than just few years like the previous one. So, please, share your opinion, what do you have? Which one is the best?

Big thing here is budget and the type you are looking for. The 'best' is also going to be highly subjective. Another thing to consider is the airlines you are likely to travel. For example Intra-Europe flights tend to have much smaller carryon size and weight restrictions than US airlines. I am not familiar with South American airlines but they could pose a problem to some 'American sized' carryons

Briggs & Riley, Rimowa, Tumi and Tom Bihm are going to be your big\more expensive names but well known for quality and reliability

If you are more into the military style bags I have heard Tactical Taylor makes some incredibly durable ones.

I think in the more moderately priced range there isn't much difference other than brand name. I picked up the Samsonite hard cover checked and carryon combo from Costco and we have been very happy with it. They've survived dozens of trips over the last couple of years with no issues. Biggest drawback is no outside pocket on the carryon on making it difficult to get items you want out easily (book for reading, charger, battery etc)

I have been eyeing this to be my 'personal item' as it fits almost all the personal item dimensions and would provide plenty of easy to access locations for my crap:

Only buy the cheap ones if you are a very infrequent traveler.

The only thing Brazil hates more than you is pubic hair.

Brazilians as a people dont hate tourists. The current political climate there is going to make the World Cup a very dicey thing for the government not the tourists. If anything there will be demonstrations in LARGE numbers during the cup because of all the press coverage.

Dont be afraid as a tourist however. The people protesting arent the poor from the slums or favelas anymore. Brazil had a tremendous amount of people go from poverty to middle class and they are waking up to what the government has done to them for the last 30 years.

I have family and friends in brazil and they EXPECT something big to happen. The government will probably fight back and turn the demonstrations into riots but the hate isnt towards America as you see in much of the rest of the world.

Bring lots of Gum and keep it in your pocket. Half of the time the kids ask for chiclets instead of money.

I personally have heard that a HUGE demonstration is planned on the first day in RIO. should be thousands if not hundreds of thousands.

What are you going for? How long is your stay? You'll have way more fun if you pack super light. My luggage suggestion would be a quality backpack in a moderate size of 40 liters or so.

And please don't promote begging, even if it's only rewarded with gum.

someone watched tosh.o last night

I just searched for Tosh.0 Brazilian pubic hair and found out he did a joke about it this week. Now I have that in my history :D

It's kind of an obvious joke though. I think I've used it before.

Brasil is a great place. The people there were friendly. Of course, that was in the cities I visited, which were not Rio. I would love to go down there for World Cup, but won't be able to get the time off. I would suggest Brasilia. Great city. They are one of the locations.

Watch out for little kids trying to distract you while someone else steals your stuff. Happened to a buddy of mine when he was down there.

Thailand is going through a coup right now...

KT

True, but it's not really that bad. I've talked to people who are currently in Thailand and they have told me that the army is present to make sure no violence takes place between the red and yellow shirts.

I want to get my pic taken with an army person at one of the checkpoints.

:)

We shouldn't derail this fellas thread. Sorry OP.
