Brand new system, cant get it to boot from CD?

I am a nooooooob, no wizard, but can follow instructions. I powered up a new gaming system, and the voice POST says, "Computer now booting from operating system". There is not an operating system installed yet. Its a brand new system, with a new unformatted hard drive. The POST screen exhibits after the voice, "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." When I press a key the message just repeats. I put the XP install disc in the CD-ROM, but it is not being read. In BIOS, my hard drive and CD-ROM are there, and I have the CD type device as "CD-ROM". My boot order is 1 Floppy drive 2. CD-ROM 3. Hard drive Here are my system specs;

Asus K8N-E Deluxe version 1.04
AMD 64 3700+
Floppy drive
Western Digital 10,000 rpm Raptor SATA
Creative CD-ROM 52X
nVidia GeForce 6800GT AGP

I have the HD connected to SATA1, and the CD-ROM connected to the Primary IDE bus. The HD shows up in BIOS as the Third IDE Master, the CD-ROM as Primary IDE Master. Both jumpers on the devices are set up as Masters. I can't find anything on the web about setting up this mobo with a single SATA HD.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Try making the CD-ROM drive the first boot device and see if that helps. Also, with the K8N-E Deluxe I believe you can press a key... now is it F8 or F12... 😕 ...I believe you can press a key and the board will initialize and then offer you a list of all the possible boot devices right on the screen so you can pick CD-ROM.

Plug your single SATA drive into the SATA fittings that are above the AGP slot. Those are the "native" nForce3 ones. The red ones down below are not.

I've tried the CD-ROM as the first boot device, and no luck. Yes, it is the F8 to choose the boot devices. My SATA is in SATA1. However, I am confused at the BIOS setup utility under ADVANCED, at the "Onboard Device" screen at "Silicon Image Mode', I don't know whether to use SATA Mode, RAID Mode, or Disabled. The "Internal SATA IDE Interface" is enabled. Still can't get the system to boot from CD. I tried another CD-ROM, and still nothing. The CD-ROM works on another computer, so I know its good. Help!

I would just disable the SI controller for now. The real question is why the board refuses to boot from CD. Could the drive be the problem, can you try your known-working CD-ROM drive in this computer? Also make sure that (duh) your data cable to the CD-ROM drive is firmly and completely seated at both ends.

u sure your XP CD is bootable? if it's a retail cd, then it is; but if it's from an ISO u downloaded, then it might not be

Thank you for the info. I've tried different ribbon cables, CD-ROMs, and double/triple checked that the cables are completely seated at both ends. Is it correct to have the CD-ROM connected to the Primary IDE bus, because of the HD being connected to SATA1? My BIOS "sees" all of my devices. I'm stumped. Bad IDE bus/mobo?

What happens if you try starting it up with the SATA drive disconnected altogether? Can you start Windows Setup from the CD-ROM then?

Nothing happens. Still going to the "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key." display. I reset the CMOS and tried again, still no luck. BIOS is listing the CD-ROM, but it just isn't being read. I'll take the CD-ROM from the computer I'm using now, and hook it up tomorrow. Thanks for all the help everyone. BTW, thanks mechBgon for your DIY guide. It really helped this "old" noob! I'll post tomorrow afternoon.

I downloaded the Windows XP Utility setup disks for Floppy Boot Install for my edition, from the Microsoft .com site. I ran the 6 floppy's and all went well till the install screen said to put in your copy of Windows XP into the CD-ROM and hit "enter". The CD-ROM will open when I push the button, close when I push it again, but *&%**(^)*&$ it will not read the CD! Now I'm going to tear apart this computer that I'm using to get the CD-ROM out and try it on the new system. Could it be a power problem, not enough juice to read? I have a thermaltake 480 watt power supply. I appreciate all help.

Funny, i just put together a new system (MSI K8N Neo, Athlon64 3000+) and it's having the same problem; it can't read the cd to boot from it.

I'll continue searching for answers from the MSI community forum.

Man, my device in this computer is a DVD-ROM, and it doesn't show up on the new PC BIOS at all. "no device detected" So I put this PC back together, and thank god the DVD-ROM still works! The Creative CD-ROM shows up in the new PC BIOS, and I changed the device type from "Auto" to "CD-ROM, saved the changes, and let the system boot from floppy. I ran the 6 utility disks, and when prompted to install the XP install CD, I push the button, the light comes on, the tray opens, pop the CD in, push the button, the tray goes in, and no lights blink, noises, or anything. The Windows Set up screen says that once the CD is in the -ROM to push "enter". I push ENTER, and nothing happens, apart from a screen flicker when I push the ENTER Key. I wrote to Asus Support Tech help. I'm going to keep researching, I know there has got to be someone else that ran into this problem before. If I check to make sure the freakin' cables are seated one more time I'm gonna start wearing the insulation off! I'll keep this thread posted as I find out more, and more importantly, when I have a fix. Thanks all
