Brand new setup, cannot install Windows

1. Brand new computer, BSODs at exact same spot during windows install.

2. Almost everything is new: e8500, hsi ati 4870 1gb, 2x2gb pc8500 gskill, gigabyte ud3r mobo. Existing components: seasonic 600w psu, three IDE/PATA hard drives and one IDE/PATA dvd drive. I put everything together, boots up and I can get into the bios. I don't have a speaker handy to listen to any possible error codes, however. Bios recognizes each hard drive (this mobo only has one ide cable, so i've had to swap out the drives), the dvd drive, the ram as listed (although I had to change voltage to correct 2.0) and the cpu at correct speed. When I boot from windows cd, it loads all the drivers, says "setup is loading windows", and around 7 seconds later, blue screens. No matter which ram slot, only one stick, which hard drive (all are on cable-select), it blue screens 7 seconds in. I've also flashed the bios to the most current version.

3. I have never been past the windows screen. If I sit in the bios for awhile, nothing happens, no blue screen. Only bsod's at the 7 second part when it's finished loading the drivers off the cd. Also, I've tried booting from the cd on my laptop, and it gets past that just fine, so no cd prob. I've also switched out the dvd drive to a brand new one, and no luck.

4. Very much repeatable; it happens everytime. I've tried all the various components that I have to diversify the setup, all to no luck. I have nothing in any of the PCI slots, expect for the ati card in the pci-e slot.

5. I have tried using each ram by itself, in each slot (with the correct voltage setting), using a brand new dvd drive, using three different hard drives that worked previously (although admittedly, they sat for a few years protected, but the bios recognizes their name and space. Also, since only one ide connection, each hard drive was tested solely with the dvd drive.), disabled nearly everything in the bios (I read that some people had the same bsod error msg as me who disabled bios raid and it worked), went with the "fail-safe" option in the bios, and updated the bios.

6. No software: windows xp 32bit. I will try to secure a 64bit soon.

7. Brand new: Intel e8500, Gigabyte EP45-UD3R, HSI ATI 4870 1gb, XP-90 HSF, 2x2gb pc2-8500 ddr2, seasonic s12 600w PSU, maxtor seagate and WD drives of various sizes, NEC and no-name dvd drive.

8. First computer in about 4 years, got everything ready to roll, or so it seemed. Any help or thoughts are most appreciated, thank you.

Best,
Danny

The BSOD error message reads:

windows has stopped installing due to a hardware problem. check your hard disks for virus or any problems. run a check disk chkdsk /f on the hard drives.

Have you run Memtest yet?

If not, that would be the first step. One bad stick of RAM can cause all sorts of problems during Windows setup, including BSODs.

Download and run Memtest in DOS with both sticks in and see if any problems are found.

Sounds like a driver load problem...What kind of Windows XP Disk are you using? Retail, or OEM? And if OEM whose disk?

Also, go into the BIOS to Integrated Peripherals and set the Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode to IDE, and try once more. This controller hosts the IDE channel as well as the purple SATA ports.

As an alternative, you could pick up a Serial ATA drive and connect it to the red SATA ports that are hosted by the Intel southbridge. Set them to non-AHCI mode and you will be able to install Windows XP without needing to supply drivers. See the owner's manual for full info on the settings.

I tried to install XP (original, not SP1 or SP2) onto a recently built machine, and it bluescreened at PCI.SYS when it went to startup the first time.

Had to dig out a disc with SP2 included in order for it to work.

OP, find a disc with SP2 included, and try to install from that.

Edit: Also try downloading Windows 7 beta 1, and install that.

What is the RAM voltage set at. You may not be getting enough power to the RAM which is causing errors durring the install preventing your install.

Thank you for the responses, I really appreciate your time.

I will run memtest to check memory; thanks for that tip.

I am 98% sure one of the installs had the SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode on IDE (and I subsequently tried each setting), but I am now retrying with that exact setting. Also, I will try with a SATA drive after that.

Ram is set to 2.1v, the higher of the 2.0v-2.1v setting. It was not automatic at first, but has since stayed at 2.1v.

New Diagnostic Info: I have used a buddy's XP 64bit Pro disc and have got past that original error message (and have not seen it since). I have been able to get to the interactive install screen, with the timer, when it showed "unable to install COM port" or something to that effect. It would finish the install, reboot, then say "Windows cannot load, missing a file". It would point to a folder within system32, and ask for the Windows setup CD so it could repair. I would take that route, but it puts me at a dos prompt "C:\Windows" with no information or direction, and no ability to get into Windows.

I borrowed another CD, also XP 64, and was able to install, reboot, and get to the actual desktop. Was able to check control panel, hardware manager, etc (this is the first time I have got this far). I rebooted, and the "windows unable to load, system cannot find file" error message would pop up, same as above, and I cannot get back into Windows. I am trying to secure a vista cd to try.

I'd like to think I am not a complete tool when it comes to computers, but I have never had so much trouble with installing windows. I don't think I've ever had a bad install/reformat in the 20+ times I have done it.

Again, thanks for your time and help.

It possible your having a hardware conflict that keeping your install from finishing. I suggest you just do your install with 1 hard drive and optical drive. Also make sure you diable in the BIOS any devices like serial parallel and sound that your not using to free up resources. Then if that works add devices one at a time and see if any problems occur.

Bingo.

I believe this is what did the trick. For the sake of just getting my new computer to run, I combined a few changes, including a Vista 64 Ultimate dvd, and it works, so I am unable to confirm which setting was the nail in the coffin. Interesting to note, however, was when Vista 64 installed, it showed two error messages during the install, and when inside the OS, it was super sluggish, Windows Defender kept crashing (most likely related), and sidebar would crash upon start. Also, double clicking, running as admin, whatever I did to files, they wouldn't open, only sit in Task Man doing nothing with 600kb of memory. Decided to reinstall, using same dvd, everything works.

Again, thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!
