Here is the link to the 1.6ghz Duron

They also have a 1.8ghz version for $34 shipped. Here is the link to it.

Click the 'Combo Deals' link next to the Customer Review and Return Policy sections to see the available mobo's with this cpu combo deals.

Edit: Thanks John, added link to the recertified boards.
Click here to get a Recertified Socket A board starting at $18 + Shipping.

I was at the egg checking out some stuff and saw this cpu. It actually runs on the 133mhz fsb. It is locked but if your mobo is able to run at 166mhz, the cpu should have no problems doing 2.0. May need a slight voltage bump.

It is OEM so you will need a HSF. But if your like me, you have 100 or more Socket A hsf's floating around.

Anyways, I didn't see this posted so hopefully it isn't a repeat post.

These are nice and VERY overclockable chips... I've had a few. Be aware though that they are a special type of Duron that was originally made to be sold in 3rd World countries or something like that. They only have 64K of L2 cache. It's fine for a basic machine, but I even overclocked, they aren't great if you are doing anything extreme. I guess I should qualify extreme... hmmm... even in their day they were never the kind of chip you would buy for a gaming box or to run databases off of... for all else, they are a great bargain.

A few people have been successful at unlocking the extra cache to make it a full blown Athlon XP.

Even at 64KB L2 Cache, it does quite well. About 10% slower than a equal clocked XP.

Also, they have a combo with a sis741 mobo for $62 or so. Not a killer deal, but not to shabby. It does have onboard video, lan, and audio.

There is also a combo deal with a sis746Fx mobo for $56 plus shipping.

The combo's include the mobo and 1.6 Duron cpu. I went ahead and mentioned the combo deals in the main post.

2 years back I fooled a "superlocked" $30 1.6G duron NewEgg refurb into thinking it was a mobile chip, cranked the core up to 2133 MHz (prime stable), and found that 1800 MHz Athlon XP chips were stronger for gaming. The missing cache makes a difference.

Don't waste your time trying to unlock newer CPUs, AMD starting superlocking them long ago, they can't be unlocked.

Also, these are regular Duron Applebred core 0.13µ (T-Bred/Barton grade
processor modules) which always came with 64 KB cache. There's nothing 'Third World' about them.

Newegg has been running a $99 combo deal for an AMD64 3000+ and motheboard for quite a few weeks now. Fry's has the same deal for even less sometimes. These 64bit chips smoke the old Durons. Even a non-power user will be able to tell the difference.

First, you made a connection that ISN'T in my post, that the 64K is different, when what i said was they they are a different type of Duron and were meant to be sold in 3rd World countries. I over stated 3rd World, they were made to sell to poor countries, not necessarily 3rd World.

Essentially, the chips will be targeted at the world's less wealthy nations where price is more important that performance. In the US, Europe and the Far East, where AMD is perceived as a provider of high-performance processors, the Duron range has been less successful than AMD's supporters might expect.

Google a little and you can find MANY links of AMD confirming this.

You need a socket A board, not a socket 478. Socket 478 is Pentium 4 and celeron.

Yeah, you want a Socket 462 Board (Socket A) and NOT a 478 Pin board. Will not work what-so-ever.

A 1.6ghz Duron should be faster than that Williamette and many more mobo's available too. A $29 1.6ghz Duron with a $18 recert mobo is hard to beat for the money.

I like those 1.8's. I have a pair that I unlocked the cache and multi processing on and ran 'em in one of my duallies. Look for them to return to distributed computing duty again for the winter!

They lowered the price on the 1.8ghz Durons. They are only $5 higher than the 1.6ghz Durons.

$5 might be worth the extra cost. The 1.8 Duron would have about a 11% clockspeed advantage for about 15% more cost. Not to bad it seems.

You mean the 3400+.

Yes, it's a Venice S754. And yes, coming from a 2400+ Socket A Sempron I can honestely say the 3400+ Venice CPU/MOBO combo for $99 blows this away. There is simply no comparison between the A duron and the 754 Athlon 64. We're talking WoW performance gains from 14fps to 50fps on the same machine. o_O
