Brand new Haswell build = shutdowns

rockfall

Junior Member
I just finished a brand new Haswell based build and it doesn't work rite.
Whenever i try to run any games or furmark it usually makes a high pitch whine sound for 1-4 seconds then and shuts completely down with no fans no lights. I have to press the power button to restart it.

Every once in a while it stays on but displays black screen with looping audo

What is wrong and how do i fix it?

heres my build http://pcpartpicker.com/p/17vmr
Was expecting better after $1500+

i am such a idiot / fixed link

From yourself or from the parts? Have you built a PC before? Sounds like something is failing and your motherboard is giving you an error beep to let you know. Most usual culprits are PSU or temperatures. Check your temps with SpeedFan or a similar program under load (idle temps mean zilch). What's your PSU's make and model?

I built it from parts. Never built a PC but have done tons of upgrades

Components are in link.

CPU temp is 33*C idle and 42*C load
GPU temp is 38*C idle and crashes under load

You have a crappy PSU.
😱
Take out the GPU and try to boot.
I took out the GPU and everything works fine. I am installing the intel graphics drivers right now

-edit-
Just finished installing the Intel graphics drivers.
It is working fine even if i run games but performance isn't so great. Only get >30frames if I put settings on low with 1680x1050 monitor

You have 4 posts, all of them in this thread. Don't whine to us if you didn't ask for advice before building!

Given that you have a really junk PSU and it works fine using the IGP, I think it's likely that your PSU cannot output enough power to handle your GPU. 750W of quality power would be plenty, but I highly doubt that the CoolMax can do that.

So either return or trash the CoolMax and buy one of these Rosewill Capstone 650W.

Ok thanks. I will return the coolmax and look at better PSUs.
Is this better? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo
Sorry didn't think to ask for advice LOL

Otherwise are compoents good?

It is better, but is kind of a waste of money. Check out my previous post for a recommendation. As for the rest of your parts, they are generally good, but there are a few places where you weren't as cost effective as you could have been. The Raptor and 7970 GHz edition jump out at me.

Oh well not worth returning them.

I am deciding between these PSUs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153174

Sorry for asking so many questions. I just don't want to end up with garbage again.
Never apologize for asking questions, that's what the forums are for and that's why people are taking interest in your thread because they'd like to help.

The power supply is where you want to put your money because everything else in the system is at its mercy. You want good, stable, clean power going to the parts you spent so much money on. I'm a big fan of Seasonic PSU's and they have the reputation of being one of the best in the business. Their 80 Plus Gold rated PSU's, e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151088, are very efficient and solid units, winning many awards. Corsair and Antec also make some quality units as well. The two you linked to are both fine. I also recommend getting a modular PSU so you only have the cables you need installed instead of dealing with all the mess of hiding every cable you don't use (or at least getting it out of the airflow). Corsair also makes a modular line, the HX series: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139012

Well I am kind of leaning towards the corsair unit because it looks similar to the one in your signature but seem to reag lots of good things about seasonc. Still not realy sure but i want to order soon. Thanks for the answer

Was the video card's 6 pin power connector attached?
And was the video card's cooling fan spinning?
You'd get the same symptom of "high pitch whine sound for 1-4 seconds then and shuts completely down" if the video card was only getting power via the PCIe slot.

Yes the PCI-E connector was attached. The fan was spinning.

It would boot and load to desktop. It mainly shut down while under GPU load.

Thanks for pointing that out, my signature was actually out of date. I used to have an Corsair HX620, however I've been using a Seasonic X650 Gold since the fall. Both are great units though.

Ok.
I ordered the Seasonic one because I want to get it up and running soon.

I will update when it arrives if I don't forget.
