Like someone said try core temp.
Those temps should have caused the cpu to throttle, did it?

Use alcohol or get the 2 part from Artic. Would anyone else remove the CPU to clean it but me, if not be careful and push the paste towards the center of the CPU when cleaning with an alcohol soaked rag.
Don't want the socket saturated with paste running off the cpu when you clean it.

Scythe, thermelright, thermeltech, are good and a lot cheaper then Zalman, I think like the Motherboar Mfgs everyone is starting to try and rape the builder now.

There are a lot of people using stock and getting good temps and since you are not oc ing the thing it should be no where near that temps unless bad mounting.

OK, this is what I did:

reapplied thermal paste and the temp rose to 88c! I discovered afterwards that I didn't fasten the fan correctly to the board (what a non idiot proof design). So I bought an arctic freezer 7 pro HSF to replace the intel stock I had, and WOW!!! what a change! from 79c the die temp shot down to 43! Do you get it? 36 degrees less! What a fan!

I agree that the intel heatsink mounting design is really crappy, especially withn a large cooler like mine, where it's really hard to reach the plastic push pins. It espeically sucks if you like to pull the cpu off a lot and tinker around. Some people recommended cleaning off the exisitng thermal compound, but I've found I can reuse mine several times before needing to totally clean it off and start fresh.

I have another system Intel system using an arctice freezer 7 Pro and it is working well. I have the fan power connector spliced into a 5 Volt power line, so its ultra quiet.

Kudos to AF7 Pro and congrats!
Mine (e6600) runs well quite cool thanks to the same device.

I think if you get a aftermarket HSF then also get a small tube of AS5 for thermal compound, it's very good combo. I don't think I trust those radio shack thermal pastes, they don't conduct heat very well.

Not to nitpick, but why are people still recommending AS5 here? IC Diamond 7 is a better thermal compound, and it can be had for around $5-$6. If you have AS5 lying around and want to save a buck or two by using it, fine, but the OP probably doesn't have any on hand.

better by 2deg is not necessarily a huge deal

On average, IC Diamond 7, Shin Etsu X23, Shin Etsu G751 (aka Arctic Cooling MX-1), Arctic Cooling MX-2, and Coolaboraties' Liquid Pro, and AS Ceramique can beat AS5 by margins of 2C or better, depending on your processor and HSF. I've seen temp differences much higher than 2C reported when using some of these pastes vs AS5, but your mileage may vary.

In some cases I can see going with AS5 if it's cheaper, but since it often costs $8 or more per tube, it often is not. I can also see going with AS5 if you've already got some, but if you don't have any, I can't see any point.

IC Diamond 7, which is apparently the best of the products listed above, costs $5.99, which is less than AS5 typically costs. If you could pay less to get a 2C drop in temps, why wouldn't you?

AS5 was good back in the day, but now there are better products that are price-competitive or even cheaper. Again, I must ask, why does anyone even bother with AS5 anymore?

glade to see you got your E6700, I don't think you should get these temps at stock, the guy building yours must have made a mistake seating the retail HSF. Even that won't give you 79+ at stock.
