Brand new compaq laptop and screen no longer comes on

A I have a friend who just got a new Compaq laptop (not sure of the model) whose screen no longer comes on. It boots up, but the screen does not come on. I suggested that she take it in to get serviced under warranty but she said that she would rather get it fixed right away vs. having to wait 10 days for a service center to fix it.

She said that she spoke to Compaq tech support, and that they told her that she may be able to fix it by using a screw driver. She did not want to chance it, so she wants me to take care of it.

Any ideas what it might be? Haven't come across this one before.

Did she accidentally select the external monitor? It is usually a combination of the blue function button and another.....
There is also a microswitch around the hinge somewhere that lets the laptop know when the top is closed. I have seen those get stuck before.

Well, I called Compaq tech support, and then suggested that I try reseating the RAM, which I did. That worked for a little bit, until it started to install the software the installs when you turn on the computer for the very first time (I'm not talking about setting up the OS). When it started installing that, for whatever reason, the screen when off again, but the power stayed on. So, I tried turning it off, and then turning it on again, but it was doing the same thing as it was before.

So, I called Compaq again, and then had me not only reseat the RAM this time, but they also had me reset it by unplugging the AC, taking out the battery, and holding down the power button for 30 sec. She said that would flush out any static electricity that was on the board. She said that builds up if you don't use it for a while, which my friend did not. Maybe it had been sitting on the shelves for a while, as it was doing that when she first got it.

So, after I did the reset and resat the RAM for the second time, it worked. And it still works. Seems to be running fine now.

The funny thing is, there's a sticker on the laptop below the keyboard that says, "BUILT TO LAST." We got a laugh out of that.
