Brand New Build for the New Year

PLEASE when you POST threads asking for input on system builds tell us...

Aloha Everybody!

Planning on my first build, which I will be using for HD video editing (using AVID), 3d fx (after effects and 3ds max), editing photo on Adobe Suite, and gaming the newest and best games (really looking forward to Diablo 3).

So far I have a few parts but would really appreciate your input.

2.I am looking to spend around $500-$600. (That probably won't include a monitor....)

3. Will be buying all of my products in the USA.

4. I believe I will be going with NVIDIA and INTEL seeing as AVID is a fussy program with it's specific requirements. I am open to others telling me otherwise though...

5. Parts I currently have :

a) case: CoolerMaster 430 Black Elite
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119227

b)Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000D 750gb 32mb cache HDD 7200rpm 6gb/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145532

c) Kingston Hyper X Performance DDR3 1600 speed RAM
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Techn...3211918&sr=8-1

d) NVIDIA Quadro FX1400 PCIE 128MB DDR 3D Graphics Card
http://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-Quadro-...3211981&sr=1-1

7. I would like to try and overclock my system since I will be working with HD video footage and 3d graphics.

8. Not exactly sure on what resolution I will want. I am guessing 1920 x 1080. Since I will be editing in HD, that makes sense to me. I have a crappy HDMI Sony Monitor that will do for now, but I definitely want a nicer monitor. Most likely will be using two! 🙂 Any recs?

9. I want to build this by the new year.

Thank you very much for any recommendations that you have. I am very green, but I helped friends in the past build a few computers. Right now I have my eyes out on the Intel 2500k processor. I possibly will have to get a better GPU (not sure that one will work with AVID HD or Premiere). Most likely staying in the Quadro family.

I hope that the equipment I have bought it sufficient enough thus far. HDD are incredibly expensive and I thought this Hitachi would do the trick. I have never owned a hitachi drive (first time for everything)

For the other parts I am unsure what to choose. I would like this system to be upgradable and fine for the next 2 years at the very least.

Look forward to your thoughts
Aloha

About what you have now:

- You'll want to run that RAM at 1.5v. You can probably do so at 1333MHz, and the speed change will have hardly any impact.

- Gaming, your budget, and quadro video cards are incompatible. A quadro that can game well will be insanely expensive. Your current card should work for AVID, but not for gaming.

Oh, and does that $500-$600 budget include shipping to Hawaii or wherever you are?

I found the data sheet for that RAM, and it is 1.5V, so you are good to go there. The rest of your parts except the Quadro are usable.

The Quadro is ancient (Geforce 6800 based) and slow. I agree with Ken, we need a little more information. What is more important to you, having a Quadro or gaming?

Well I want to do both....so am I screwed? I didn't know that the Quadro 1400 wouldn't be able to play new games as well. (ignorant...)

I am definitely going to be editing films and commercials on my workstation, but I also want to be able to play games like Starcraft 2, Diable 3, and some FPS when I have spare time....

A Quadro FX 1400 came out around 2005, so no, it won't be able to play a 2011 game at all. A lowly $100 6770 is about 20 times faster (not kidding). AVID only supports Quadros, period. That isn't to say that a GeForce won't work, but you won't get any help if you have issues.

The cheapest current-generation Quadro, the Quadro 600 is $170, or roughly a quarter of your budget. The next least expensive is the Quadro 2000 at $450, so that is not feasible given your budget. The 600 is good for about 22 FPS in SC2 on all ultra, so turning down the details will probably get something playable.

So, here's my best shot:
i5 2400 $190
ASRock H67M $80
Your RAM $0
Quadro 600 $170
Your HDD $0
Samsung DVD Burner $18
Neo Eco 400C $25 AR
Your case $0
Total: $483 + shipping

You could get a lot better performance in games for your money if you could use a GeForce. I'll let somebody else chime in about their experiences with AVID on that front though.

EDIT: Saw your edit. You can get an i5 2500K + P8Z68-V LX for cheap at Microcenter ($260, I think?). That gives you a better mobo and CPU for about the same price.

This is probably a real stupid question...but can I use two different graphics chips? The Quadro that I am getting for free to use with AVID and some other geforce chip for games?

The Chipset you mentiond is only able to do 1333 DDR3. I Saw a few other boards that are capable of DDR3 at 1600 speeds for only $20 more. Wouldn't that make a big difference for future upgrades too?

the i5 2500k at microcenter is $179. That deal you found sounds pretty darn good to me. If I need to up my budget a little I will...I was just trying to keep it as close as I could to that. I appreciate your help!

Yeah if you can swing the 2500k + Z68 mobo at Micro Center that would be the best deal. The 2500k is $179.99 (lowest price around) and if you pair that with any Z68 mobo they will take an extra $50 off the mobo. So you could get the 2500k and the mobo mfenn recommended for around $270 total, including tax.

Would it be possible to have the QUADRO FX 1400 card for HD video editing as well as a RADEON or GeForce card for games? Not sure if you can do that or not?

Seems like microcenter is having a huge december sale....what card would everyone recommend if this is possible?

I am going to purchase my CPU and chip set tomorrow at Microcenter. Does anyone else have any recommendations for chip sets?

Also the PS and After Market Cooler?

You could maybe get it to work, but you would have to physically switch the monitor cable and do some driver hijinks every time you wanted to switch. Not a good situation.

You honestly need to to just forget about the FX1400. It is extremely old and slow. As in, it was the bare minimum for the 2006 versions of this software and you're asking it to run the 2011 version.

Get the P8Z68-V LX motherboard if you're going to MC. That has all the features you need at a reasonable price.

You don't need an aftermarket HSF if you aren't going to be overclocking. If you are going to overclock, then either of the ones you linked is fine.

As for the PSU, the 400C that I linked will work quite well unless you end up raising your budget significantly and go with a monster GPU.

Just wanted to reiterate how much I appreciate your advice and help. I ended up going to MC, but I bought the MSI Z68A-G45 G3 1155 ATX board instead. Had more features and was the same price roughly. I really hope I am not making a mistake by going MI....I haven't head much bad nor much good about them as of late....I read on another site there possibly might be overclocking issues. I hope not.

Only three things left to buy. A GPU, a heatsink (most likely the 212), and a PSU. I believe I want a heavier psu, most likely i will end up buying a middle gtx card.

MSI is fine, I wouldn't worry about it. How much budget to you have left?

No problem at all, glad to help. 🙂
