Your most economical choice (this has been proven over and over) is always to buy a decent beater, fix it yourself and drive it until it dies. The nice thing about it is you could care less if you get a scratch, etc. They'll have more performance and safety and break down about as often as Korean cars.

Kudos to Apoppin!

When you start looking at the used crap that you get for $7k, this makes it a good deal! I personally would not buy one, but if you need a cheap daily driver with a warranty, you can't beat it. A/C isn't needed in S. Cal. I am sure they gouge you if you start adding on items. But Appopin lucked out and got the "bait" car to get you in the dealership. Good for you!

Also, we bought our Expedition (2.5 ton vehichle doesn't play well with subcompact cars 🙂 ) down in S. CA. Saved about $6000 over the "best price" in the central valley. You can't beat the shear volume of sales in S. CA. or large cities.

"This may be a deal but if I had 7k for a car I would buy a used Lexus or Toyota. It would outlast a KIA and probably have a higher resale after it's all said and done. "

No one is gonna call chrisaduffy on this?? which planet do you live on?? your gonna get a used LEXUS that RUNS for less than $7000.00??? HAHAHAHAHA

i really hate thread crappers, even worse i hate STUPID thread crappers.

If you go back 10-15 years ago all the people that are crapping on the Kias, the same things were being said about the crappy Honda, Toyotas, and Datsuns.

Times change, and you have to start somewhere. If you haven't noticed the Koreans are moving upscale in a hurry. Kia just came out with a kick ass minivan that has to have Chrysler worried.

Get the kia for $7k now just like the lucky guy got the Datsun 280Z for $1800 in 1978.

kia's cars have consistenly shown extremely poor resale value. Drive that $7000 car off the lot and it becomes a $4000 car (trade-in) instantly 🙂

I guess if you are a girl , its okay to drive a kia, i mean.

I guess I should feel bad now that I picked up a foreclosed 2000 Benz for less than10k..hehehe. Yeah its a year old, but it has a Benz motor, and to my knowledge, its kickass luxury. Hey, some people got it and some people dont!

Do you realize the KIA Rio is just a Ford Aspire? That is right. That is all it is. Kia made that car for Ford. All they did was change the body style. Otherwise it is mostly unchanged.

"wasteful, expensive, ecologically irresponsible land yacht " LOL - You people crack me up! Makes me feel great to know I own a yacht!

If this thread can be salvaged to be anything resembling some useful information besides "I got a great deal on a car", or "that car sucks", maybe someone will reply that can calculate what actually IS a hot deal on a car. This would include not only what the purchase price is, but also what the car would be worth on resale. If car is initally very inexpensive, and after 5 years the resale is very low, that may not be a better deal on price if one can pay more when you buy the car and get a MUCH higher percentage back upon resale, or pay the same and get more back on resale. I wish the best of luck to the person who bought the Kia, I am just saying that unless you like that particular car, in the end it may not prove be the best bang for the buck, even when taking the warranty into consideration.

So what new and used cars are the best deal when taking into account depreciation and resale value? Anyone have the data?

Civic also gets better milege. Hell my 2001 Accord get 30mpg. That only cost me double what he paid for the kia. Better car+bigger+same mpg=he got ripped. The Ford Assfire...errr.Kia rio can stay at the dealer.

The Accord is definately a better car in every way except one... price. The cheapest Accord you can get is ~$15k. Finance that at 8% interest with 0 down and you're looking at $300 a month for 60 months.

Now take this Kia Rio. Let's say it's $8k. At 8%, you can finance that for 36 months and play only $250 a month. 48 months is $195, 60 months is $162.

For alot of people that $50-$140 per month they save IS a big deal, and Kia's great warranties only make the deal sweeter.

Thanks, NoBosons, that's a great link:

IntelliChoice annually announces the total ownership cost of vehicles from each model year. This analysis includes calculations for depreciation, financing, insurance, fees, fuel, maintenance and repairs over a five-year period. The sum of these seven categories represents what a consumer can expect to spend to own and operate a vehicle.

Their picks show the true hot deals if price and value are your primary considerations.

I suppose the savings of $150 a month to drive a kia, would offset the absolute loser status everyone is going to think about you as they pass your ass on the streets with their accords....

Back in June my girlfriend bought a new 2001 Hyundai Accent GS, 2Dr. hatchback, 5spd. A/C, AM/FM cassette, for $8300 + tax. It retailed for about $10300. We drove the Kia but didn't like the way it handled or accelerated as compared to the Hyundai. Several years ago I never would have even considered this car, but Hyundai has really turned this car around in quality and workmanship, although it still does have terrible resale value. She now has 7,500 miles on it with no problems, and it also has the 10yr, 100,000mi warranty with 5yr roadside assist. and BTW, its fun to drive.
I also should mention that to keep the warranty in place you MUST take the car in for the periodic mileage checks which total about $350 in the first year! This includes silly things like checking for loose suspension, and exhaust nuts and bolts. The big one occurs at about 60,000 miles when the timing belt requires replacement ~ $400! What's up with that? Why can't they make timing CHAINS like the one on my Toyota truck with the original one at 110,000 miles.

This may shock you, but not everyone cares about their "image". Sometimes little things like being able to pay your bills and making ends meet take precedent.

If I had to the make the choice, I'd rather spend that $150 a month on a nicer apartment and AT hot deals 😀 Fortunately I make enough right now to have both a nice car and nice apartment. However, if my situation changed you can be damn sure I'd sacrifice the car first.

Heck yea! and those accord owner would have to deal with their plain jane, no identity, old and overpriced status while people blew past their Accord in the brand new Altima 😎

You can't polish a terd. Putting leather and a CD player does not mean upscale. The Koreans are trying. The Japanese are executing quality for the most part. American companies are standing still as usual because people will buy american regardless of quality.

Why is Chrysler worried about a rebadged Ford Windstar? They need to worry about the Toyota and Honda. They have less problems then the Dodge.

Hell yeah rufruf! 🙂 Nissan is coming out with some serious firepower for 2002. The Sentra SE-R with 180hp, the Altima with 240hp, and the Maxima with 260hp. Then a year later the "260+ hp" Z.

Unless Honda/Toyota come out with something, I'm certain my next car will be a Nissan. The question is, a Z or an Infiniti G35? Depends of if I have a kid by then I guess 😀

<< and the Maxima with 260hp. >>

I've seen commercials represent Maximas as having 255 horses and not 260, what gives???

Gerrick is right. You can't polish a terd. You can dress it up with lettuce and tomato and slap it between two pieces of bread, but in the end all you are left with is a sh!t sandwich.
