I need to take my car tomorrow to get new brake.. pads. shoes. the part that wears out and makes a scraping sound to tell you to go get it fixed. is that an expensive thing? I'm trying to decide if I need to transfer money before I go. I know you can't tell me exactly what it's going to cost but in general.. is that a cheap (200) job or an average (500) job or a spendy (800+) job?

What's the scraping sound, or is it when your brakes don't stop you at the traffic light?

A brake pad replacement should be relatively cheap, under $100. If the rotors are shot, count on $250-400 depending on make and model.

haha.. they stop fine.. so far. they just occasionally make a scraping noise.. the manual says that's normal and is supposed to happen, to tell me when it's time to get them serviced.. so.. since it's happening, that's what I'm going to do.

and I'm going to take them to the toyota dealer to get fixed because I have to sit there and wait while they get around to it and then do it and the toyota dealer is the nicest place to be stuck waiting around, in town. they have comfy upholstered chairs and huge flat screen tv and wifi and computers you can use if you're not toting your own and good free coffee and a cafe for fancy coffee and snacks if free doesn't do it for you and when they're finished fixing the car, they wash it for you. even the roof. I can wash my car fine but I'm not tall enough to see the roof, much less do a good job washing it.. some years I've invested all my mothers day credits in askin' the men around here to clean my car inside and out (I hate washin' the inside of the windshield.. really really hate it..) but they *never* finish (and the inside of the windshield is one of the things they never get to) so then I'm peeved because I gave up flowers and/or presents for a chore I didn't get done so.. I'm excited to need my brakes fixed at mothers day so I can at least get the roof of my car washed for "free" :p

if there are places that will fix them for 99 bucks, can I assume that it'll cost less than 500 bucks to get it done at the toyota dealer?

edit: oh.. yeah.. yay.. I can. whew. :)

so.. which was it.. you didn't read it, or it was difficult to read?

ignore the middle, that was just me trying to work up some enthusiasm for having to spend a big chunk of my day chillin' in a waiting room.

the first part and last part weren't hard to read, what do you know about brakes?

Absolutely less than $500. But brake jobs are always a ripoff...I spent a combined total of $150 to put on new pads and rotors on all four wheels and bleed the brakes myself. It's easy work, all you really need is a jack and a couple of tools that you should already have.

i don't wanna know nothin except why you thought the first part and second part wasnt hard to read.
IF YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY, WHY NOT USE THE CAPITOL LETTER KEY? IT WOULD MAKE IT SOO MUCH EASIER TO READ.

Well, if your rotors haven't been resurfaced (AKA turned) before, and if you haven't felt any sort of shudder from the front or rear of your car while braking, and you haven't worn your pads down to the point where they're scraping on the metal, you're probably fine to use the old rotors. Just get them turned.

No, you can't assume that. In all likelihood, you're going to get raped on the price at the dealer. Dealers make a lot of money from their service departments. For what it's worth, you can probably buy the parts that need to be replaced for well under $50 at an Autozone. I recently taught my son how to replace brake pads. "That's all there is to it?!" was his comment when we were done. Get a quote before you commit to the work.

haha.. I'm a middle aged woman who can't even get the men in the house to wash the roof of my car for me. it's worth the money to pay someone to do it, trust me..

Anno, if ya hear that scraping noise, it means metal against metal. This is a bad sign for brakes. Brake pads are the "wear pads" against metal rotors that stop your vehicle.
You can ask to look at your rotors, and if ya see wear marks, scrapes or gouges, you need these replaced.

Ok. is 500 still a reasonable max to expect, if I need rotors, or should I prepare myself for more? I do have a 10% parts/labor coupon. :)

Not necessarily...it could just be the wear indicator built into the pads that scrapes when they get low. If it just started making the squealing noise, this is most likely it...plus, real metal-on-metal contact (the rotor-killing kind) can be felt through the brake pedal.

New brake pads (the cheap ones) are $20/set at a parts store, they only take about an hour to do, and are one of the easiest car repair type jobs...find someone who knows a bit about cars and get them to do it :)

If this isn't an option - don't take it to the dealer, you'll get raped. Spending 2x - 3x the cost at the dealer vs. an independent mechanic just for the plush waiting room and "free" car wash is completely not worth it. Dealer parts markup is insane.

well.. I took it to the dealer, because those were my instructions.

it's one thing to be told you're making stupid choices by faceless people on the internet and a whole 'nother thing to be told that by the man you live with, so I don't make decisions about car repairs anymore..

he fixes the things he can fix, when he has time to, but these days he works every day and when he's not working it's generally dark and he's generally asleep. we have to make an 8 hour trip next week and the car needs brakes before we do that. I'm sure it's not beyond the realm of possibility that I could change brake pads.. however.. I'm equally sure it's better that I don't. sometimes even though you can do something yourself, cheaper, it's better to pay someone else to do it. if that wasn't the case, there would not be restaurants.. *everybody* can cook.

I took it to the dealer, and I got my front brake pads replaced. I got new rotors. I got my back brake cylinders replaced, my pads cleaned, my.. whatever's machined.. drums? something.., my fluid flushed and changed. I got my AC belts.. 2 of 'em, replaced (that was on the list of things I needed done when I left home), and my timing belt replaced (turns out I shoulda done that in 2004.. oops..).

so the final answer to the question.. how much is it going to cost me to take my car to the toyota dealer and get the brake pads replaced is.. 1007 bucks. after the 10% parts and labor coupon I found on their website. and.. while that might feel like rape to some of y'all, it feels like a fixed car to me. :)

mr. old hippie, I'm sorry if I ruined your evening again.

I dunno, like I said, it wasn't my decision but.. I think I probably did need all the stuff that was done.. the car's going to be 9 in october and none of that stuff had ever been done before.. they showed me the brakes stuff, we knew the AC belts needed doing and the timing belt.. that was the spendiest thing, and overdue and.. well.. I'd rather fix it before it breaks than after.
