what exactly do the rear drums do? and do i need them, or is the mechanic yankin my chain. My brakes arent to great right now, but i always thought the rear tires never usually need such extensive brake work, if any at all.

They're like rotors, except bigger, heavier, and with a fundamental design problem. They DO need to be replaced eventually, though.

They do a lot more than you think. While they do a little less than half the braking, they're still very important.

they are a kind of brake. you have disc's on the front and drums on the rear is because the drums are cheaper and your car is cheap too.

The rear drums help slow the car down... They are just a cheaper braking system then calipers. Rears are usually only around 20% +- brake bias.

If the drums are worn, replace them. Have the brakes blead also to take out any air.

LOFL. It's beyond me why the damn things are cheaper. There's more metal, they're a funky shape, etc. But they are, without fail.

You read drums are part of the rear brakes. With that knowledge you have essentially answered your own question.

Link to how drum brakes work.

you can't beat disc brakes' bling factor. thus they are more expensive. drums don't really bling.
