brakes: how do you ride them?

I prefer doing whatever I feel like at the time.

If I'm driving with a date, or people that aren't used to my driving....light and slow. No need to scare them.

With friends, by myself....yeah hard and short usually. I can relpace pads, for free...in like 45 minutes. And my rotors are incredibly cheap....so I don;t mind lol

Braking hard and fast puts more stress on the chassis, suspension, and tires too. Not just your brakes.

I coast to a stop usually unless I have to brake then I do it very lightly or aggressively at first to where I am going slower then keep coasting the rest of the way so I never actually stop and keep SOME momentum. Example: Going 50mph, light turns red... Depending on if I know the light and traffic well enough... brake down to 30mph way before the light and coast the rest. If I went 50 the whole way then braked lightly-ish/hard-ish I would have had to stop all the way AND then regain all that speed again. This way I avoid the whole situation. Other people freak the fuck out on the road when I do it too and I watch them speed past me and then brake super hard to a stop. I'm like, "Ok..."

I would pass you, be stopped at the light, and then gone after it changed before you even got there....

You think that, but that never happens when I do it. (And we're talking about CIVILIAN VEHICLES :O)

I do that to people like you all the time.

Or sometimes I'll return the favor and do about 15MPH down the road if you're the only car behind me.

You have brakes, use them. They're cheap to replace.

You're just gonna run into a car anyway. >.> It makes no difference.

I do this generally, unless I am driving enthusiastically when I am very hard on my brakes (I sometimes get brake fade).

Brake fade on the streets wtf lol

If the lights red and I am 1/4 mile or less I just get off the gas and coast, when I start getting close I gradually brake.

Easy.

Believe me, it isn't hard to induce on some cars especially if you live in a very hilly area and you like to drive spiritedly.

There is a performance street driving axiom that says that if you have to use the brakes in any way, you've made some other driving mistake.

...picked the wrong lane
...forgot to swerve.
...afraid to use the the sholder
...obeyed a stop sign.
...etc.

I brake as necessary. I have built in automatic braking. Sometimes I brake early, sometimes later, sometimes hard, sometimes soft, etc. I don't think about it much.

I downshift sometimes to slow down, but mostly to hear the V8 rumble.

My owner's manual recommends engine braking, so I'm guessing it's not a problem.

Nor should it be in ANY modern car. Honestly, I've found so much misinformation about engine braking online it's crazy. Complete nonsense like it wears out your engine faster or it uses more fuel than coasting in neutral and people believe this bullshit. Fact is, every time you take your foot off the gas you are engine braking.

What's a brake pedal. I coast like there's no tomorrow. All the Saturn has is momentum. I'll be damned if I am going to come to a complete stop at a red light if I don't need to.

I brake to save fuel generally, which means I don't brake unless I need to. And when I need to, I brake as little as possible.

When going to work, I brake as much as I can (and speed much, much more). GOTTA get that Manhattan alternate-side street parking before it fills up (and hopefully after the street sweeper comes along).
Going back home, totally the opposite. Light taps, try to keep some distance, but this is usually in light-moderate traffic. My best effort was no braking at all on the highway until my exit- a 12-13 mile stretch on the Long Island Expressway with an average 3-4 car length distance. That took a bit of concentration, perfect timing of letting off of the gas and then tap on again, rinse, repeat.
