Brake Pad Question

I just bought a set of Akebono brake pads, and it says to remove the protective film on the noise insulator(which is the shim right?) before applying the lubrication to the pad back. The shims have a coating applied to them, but it seems that its supposed to be there. Does anyone have experience with these types of pads, and what the protective film refers to? Thanks

Check with Akebono directly, trying to be as specific as possible. A lot of the directions don't always match the product they ship with.
