I have a friend who offered to build me a guitar at cost in exchange for me building him a website. Link to past work

I'v never picked up a guitar so what characteristics would you like in a guitar?

Currently I'm set on a super glossy black stain on wood with silver accents. I have no idea about what shape I want the body.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

I cant view your link but are you talking about an acoustic or an electric?

Looks like all electrics, and mostly Gibson styled - LP, a sortof SG and even a V.

OP what kind of sound are you after? You can name bands/guitarists if you'd like.

I really like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, U2, Led Zeppelin, and just things like the guitar in the background of the song Power by Kanye West.

Thanks!

Based on that, and aside from your first and last(studio anyway) choices, you'll likely want a dual humbucker equipped guitar, and something with a nice hunk of wood. Think Les Paul style body with a decent weight to it.

This one guitar he made from scraps off of a wrecked Georgia Theater. The guitar is now being signed by big name bands one of which is the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Cool isn't it?

He recommended a dual humbucker ;) Does it matter what type of wood? I was just going to find a piece of wood that had the grain I liked and go with it.

I would go with mahogany personally, if you want a cool top grain go with a maple cap for it.

Just put in one single coil that is wrapped so damn tight that it picks up guitars playing all over town.

I was looking at body styles and I really like how the Fender Stratocaster looks. I'm thinking about going with a black fret board and where the neck meets the body to the bottom I'll have the wood stained a deep red with a satin finish kinda like the guitar above. The rest of the body I'll go with wood stained black with a satin finish. I don't want to hide too much of the grain

I'm biased, but I think the Strat has the most comfortable, functional body shape.

I personally really enjoy the PRS custom and Schecter Omen style bodies. They're similar in shape to strats, except they're much thicker overall and have more weight behind them (which I like). They also have nice curved/contoured edges where strats are mostly flat

As far as color and finish, my personal favorite is a deep blue quilted look like this:

Bah, changed that pic to a different one.

Now that you've pretty much decided on a shape and dual humbuckers, it's time to start thinking of the finish. Do you like the look of natural wood with just some stain and clear coat? Would you like something with color but still wood grain? Or maybe just a classic solid color?

I was going with a dark red stain and a black stain both with no clear coat (well no gloss)

I was going to have the red part follow the neck into the body and just make a line from the top to bottom in red and have the rest in black

Any ideas how to emphasize the grain in the wood? Kinda like in the infinity m37 they claim they have used silver dust, hand-polished into Wood...

I'm unsure how the finishes are done really. I know with the quilted pattern that I linked to, they stain the wood then sand down most of it except the 'deepest' parts. Then they stain it again. This gives it more depth and makes it look more wavy than it actually is, which is what I like. There's also the 'flame' top stain which is more like just lines:

vs. quilted again

You can see the difference.

I'm having trouble picturing exactly what you want. So you want a stain that will bring out the grain in the wood, but you DON'T want it shiny? Something similar to this, but in black/red?:

I do like that last link a lot!

Kinda like this grain: Link notice how it looks like silver dust has been polished into the wood grain? Yeah I don't want it shinny

Here is the layout kinda:

I've always been a strat guy, but I think the Gibson ES 330's are very nice looking.
