brain transplant? what happens when not in a body?

I'm pretty sure your brain would artificially create some kind of sensory input. Read up on sleep paralysis or mind awake body asleep. It'd probably be something like that. Except it would suck because there would be no waking up from it.

ahh sorta like people who loose an arm or a leg, but they get an itch on the missing limb?

Well assuming the blood was compatible and at the right pressure, you could probably keep the brain alive for a few days. Without sensory input after a few days you'd likely start getting some plasticity changes and rewiring. The hard part is hooking the brain back up to a compatible body and getting the nerves all connected so that the backup bodies heart will beat and all the other systems fall under brain control. Turtles can live for 3 days after decapitation.
