I wonder why they assumed that human evolution more or less stopped 50,000 years ago.

many believe that human evolution did not stop but instead changed completely since humans are able to manipulate their environment, and in effect their own evolution, unlike any other species.

This is correct. Survival of the fittest doesn't apply to humans due to medical science. Poor eyesight? Glasses, contacts, or PK. Illness? Antibiotics Genetic defect? Surgery. Instead of these defects dying out, they're corrected and then passed on to others during reproduction. In a survival of the fittest situation, these defects would have lessened the chances of reproduction, so eventually they would have died out.

Exactly. Medicine has been fvcking up the gene pool since it was invented. It's hilarious how people think that gene treatment is going to ruin humans forever. Sustaining and allowing people with medical absurdities to procreate is directly opposing and overtaking the force of natural selection among humans.

It is high time that people are different. We are NOT all the same. We look different. We have different genes. We respond differently to medication. We have different risk factors or protection factors. Etc. I find it refreshing that researchers and medicine finally began re-recognizing the differences in the last few years. Soon we'll have specialized medicine (detection, prevention, and treatment) that is better for us all than generic "we hope this works" medicine that we now have. If you are offended that you are getting better medicine, then tough sh!t.

Read above.

EDIT: if we were still under natural selection, I'd probably be out of the gene pool by now due to bad eyesight.

So what, do you believe in the church of evolution where if nature doesn't select you for survival you should die?

I was about to post this too. Smart people reproduce the LEAST. Technically the human race should be becoming dumber. Of course those kinds of things aren't just based on intelligence, but social and relgious factors and so on.
