Texas took the largest hit in terms of number of closures. All were reserve bases and depots. Its odd though, they shut down Carswell in the late '80s or early '90s. In the mid '90s it came back as Joint Reserve Base, under a different name. Now its back to Carswell Air Station & Joint Reserve Base.

Anyone that thinks these dont have economic impact, even the "small" bases, has no idea what they are talking about. It took over 10 years and the reopening and major usage of Carswell for the area that surrounds it to come back economically.

Most of the TX sites are reserve centers, not large bases. Therre functions will be folded up into other sites.

Ellsworth supports an outdate mission.

Look at what the mission of the actual sites are before panicing.

These lists are not made up at the spur of the moment, usually 2-3 years before hand, then are evaluated from different standpoints before being presented.

Congress has to do a up/down, no cherry picking.

I really don't care if they close Ellsworth myself. They have half the B-1 bombers stationed there and they will all be moved to .....Texas of course. They can pursue their "outdated mission" there. LMAO

Ellseworth has all modern, updated facilities and I don't really see how closing it will save much money?? It will just put the paychecks of the military personel in another bank someplace else.

I hope if they're going to close it, they do it fast. The Black Hills area has had a very, very good economy for a long time and I welcome them to "my nightmare". Maybe next election they won't feel so conservative??? :laugh:

Difference between a base and a reserve center.
Most bases will have a short term negative impact, but after 5-10 years, the impact can become positive in terms of development. MAny times it is up to the local community to determine how to put this massive resource into play.

Actual bases have a built up infrastructure, that is well maintained; high densiity and single family housing, small business structure, warehouses, offices, utilites structures and sometimes airfields

The are about half a dozen major facilities being closed and the rest are reserve facilities and fluff and leftovers from the last BRAC as someone else mentioned. I have to say looking at the list that it looks like to me that partisonship played no role in the creation of the list. The pentagon was very even handed in selecting the facilities for closure.

Now we get to see the politics and BS as the BRAC committe reviews the list and resubmits to the white house then congress will grandstand it for a year or so.

SAC was disbanded in 1992.

Don't know about the other one, but Deseret Chemical Depot in Utah will have incinerated all the chemical weapon stores in Utah at the end of 06 so the shutdown just means they aren't going to try to import the munitions from other sites to burn them.

The complete purpose of having the BRAC was to get politics out of the equation.
Congress realized that they would never agree on a closure; therefore the BRAC was set up to be an yea/nay vote with no cherry picking allowed.

Yea, they just load BRAC with all ex-politico's so that all the politics and BS occurs behind closed doors. Jim Hansen spent 20+ years in the house making sure Hill Airforce base in Utah never made it on any lists and he's one of the members of BRAC and big supprise, Hill isn't on the list.

Like San Fransico, they want the bases to close in Louisiana.

They want the Real Estate to give to developers for more Condos and Apartments.

It used to be known as the shadow Pentagon, if D.C. got taken out, the Govt would be able to be run out of Ft Mac. They must have moved to another site.

Also closing Naval Air Station Atlanta is a surprise. It is a shared base with Lockheed, they build the F-22 and C-130's there. Also when a President visits Georgia, they fly in and out of NAS Atlanta. Guess they would have to use Atlanta Airport like any other civilian.

Lockheed Marietta wil inherit the airport facilities, there will be some effort to leave the air traffic control
in the juristiction of a military resident group to conduct flight test & welcome dignitaries.

I'm sure that there are a lot of Air Force types who are excited by that news. I've heard more than one person say that if you are not divorced before you get there, you will be before you leave.

Not hard to do considering that a majority of military bases, particularly the Army, exist in key Republican states.

Oh, and politicians from both parties are guilty of protecting such installations in their home states, often hindering or otherwise blocking closures and consolidations that would provide the greatest benefit to our military.
