solution to energy "crisis":

more nuclear power plants - ~50% of the US still runs on coal, which puts more radioactive material in the atmosphere than a nuclear plant

end of media oil shortage FUD - canada is our #1 importer overall for petroleum/petroleum-based products, and has potentially more oil reserves than Saudi Arabia

expansion of US oil drilling

What are we going to do with all the nuclear waste?

Gas went up 10 cents today at my local station to $3.08, which is a new high for the station.

Destroy it by dumping it in nuclear waste!

This is capitalism people... there is no law requiring oil companies to pump oil from their fields. It is a free market economy.

If BP wants to shut down a couple of fields to replace sections of pipeline, it is their right.

Take the bus/subway/train, ride your bike, carpool, or walk. Save some money and do your part to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

its called abusive capitalism...
Grrr...

It's not a right and it's not abusive capitalism. And it's not some conspiracy to bump oil up another $2/barrel or drive gas to $5/gallon. It's negligence. Plain and simple.

Every other oil field administrator on the slope runs a pig through their pipes about every two weeks. A pig is robot of sorts that checks for weak/thin points and sweeps the corrosion causing sludge out of the pipe. Even the 800 mile long Trans-Alaska Pipeline runs a pig every two weeks.

BP had not run a pig through any of its lines since 1992. :| And the only reason they ran this one through is that, as part of a criminal investigation spawned by their 200,000 gallon leak last winter, they were ordered to by the courts. So the net result after running this pig through is that *shock* all their pipes are rotten (some are over 80% worn through) and they all need to be replaced.

Other fields on the slope pumping oil into the pipeline have demonstrated that their infrastructures are clean and free of corrosion. Amazing what properly maintaining your equpment does. No sludge = no corrosion.

Whoever is in charge of BP up there needs to be strung up.

while it is legel for them to continue to bump prices up i feel its dumb. mainly now people are wanting the car manufacters to pump money into alternitive fuel ideas. Also if someone comes up with a way to majorly reduce the amount of oil we use they will be very very rich.

What are we going to do with the tons of crud we are dumping into the atmosphere in a dispersed method using anything else? what about the radioactive material inherent in any coal that we are dumping everywhere? What about the greenhouse gases? What about the tons of chemicals it takes to make photo cells? Or windmills?

This is what amazes me about people, they completely forget about the alternatives and what harm they do. Every time somebody says "nuclear" the response is.

OMG, BILLIONS OF TONS OF WASTE, WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE, OMFG RUN FOR THE HILLZ0RZ!

I'd rather have casks of waste than crap-tons dumped into the air. Furthermore, breeder reactors can cut down on that waste significantly. The soft waste, produced by pipes and such, isn't a huge factor, especially considering breakthroughs, like we just saw in UC:SD, can help metal withstand nuclear fatigue.

The biggest problem with people and nukes is that they are ignorant to the facts, blissfully so. In fact, they would rather get all hippie on the problem than face the reality that, when all things are considered, it is the cleanest and most concentrated form of energy around that is *FEASIBLE* right now.

Yep, this isn't some grand conspiracy by "BushCo" and the oil companies. It is simple negligence by a single oil company, BP. And they will pay too. Having to shut down their oil field for weeks/months will cost them more money than they could ever hope to makeup through higher oil prices.
