it wasn't portrayed, that's the point. the director originally filmed it so that it would be portrayed, but the film was slapped with an NC-17 rating, so they had to re-cut in order to get an R rating. the movie "this film is not rated" is a documentary about the clusterfvck that is the MPAA, which is why they were talking to the director of "boys don't cry," someone who's art was adversly effected by the MPAA's asinine rating rationale.
i haven't seen the movie, but i heard an interview related to it on NPR.
