"...whatdyya think?"

Anybody that's too lazy to capitalize letters is probably also too lazy to troubleshoot a simple PC problem. If I ever have trouble with one of my SB Live! Value cards, I'll figure out how to fix it and let you know too.

In the mean time, what would you suggest people buy instead, and for how much?

SB Live has problems on an 815 chipset also. I pulled mine and sold it. Don't need the grief. No Creative Here!!

Hrm. I've had my Live Value for two and a half years and it has never given me problems, neither under Windows nor Linux. My brother has a Live Value on a KT133A board under Windows 2000 and it works perfectly for him. People who make blanket statements about the quality of hardware are usually overblowing their own experiences.

Creative has done nothing but sit on their laurels since Aureal died. Release 3 different flavors of the same card now and then pat yourself on the back for being "innovative." I hope nVidia, Turtle Beach, Philips and GTXP can push Creative do innovate, not just vegetate.

<< The last version of Liveware is more than a year old. My Hercules GTXP has been out for only a few months, and they already released 3 different driver version for win2k. >>

Maybe Hercules just writes crappy drivers and has to patch them every month or so. 🙂

Well I just got mine working this weekend. Downloaded new Creative driver and Via update and waahhlah. However Creative will have to really work some magic to get me to buy any of there products ever again.

I didn't seem to find any trouble with my sb live + amd chipset mobo. So i think we should kick via's ass instead!

Well Asus (my motherboard) told me to go to Creatvie's website and download the 20mb driver and that would fix the problem and then Via released an update that was badged as the fix also. I did both so I don't know who culprit is for sure. I am not a huge Via fan either but hey it works for now.

My SB Live also works perfectly fine since the day I installed it, so no need to boycott it...it's nice for gaming, DVD surround and stuff...

However, I know if I want professional quality and sound for my studio purposes, I am heading over to my second rig => Terratec EWS64XL 😀

P.S. We're looking for a catchier acronym 😉

Bottom line these days, even if you had zero problems with an SBLive, why bother? Sound quality wise it's nowhere near the TB Santa Cruz and I'm guessing probably the same against the Phillips cards.

EAX is a joke, especially in 2k. Why can TB's drivers with EAX work better than the company that created the api? I don't get it.

SBLive doesn't have any decent hardware features like um.. Gee, HEADPHONE JACK? It's probably the most simple thing you could put on a card that's really useful, for privacy, not waking up people, and for 3d games. But Creative has ignored it. Even the MX300 had it.

Creative needs a good kick in the butt from competition because their current products are crap.

I have had problems in the past with soundblaster, but I don't think it requires a boycott. Once I got everything working it turned out to be a decent card. I shouldn't have had to put as much effort as I did for the results that I got. I am just not going to recommend soundblaster cards to any friends. There are now some competitive alternatives on the market now. Creative's 15 minutes of fame are up.

At least they're doing something to correct them. Better than OLD crappy drivers... 😉

Bah, let's move on to a real issue...ilke PANTS! It's time we put an end to the tyrannical despot of chaffing that is pants.

In my apartment, we have a day called No Pants Thursday. Shorts, sarongs, kilts--wear whatever you want on Thursday, as long as it's not pants. Also, there's a lot of serious drinking.

I call upon you, anandtechers (techies? techens?) to just spend one day a week boycotting pants--Just one day. See how it changes your life.

Also, a little bit back on topic, I'm looking to buy a Santa Cruz for $50 and a PCI video card. Here's the link to my WTB thread:

My SBLive! and A7V have gotten along together very nicely for almost a year. Although the A7V uses the 686A south bridge so the VIA problems probably wont happen. Until it starts causing any major problems I think I'll stay with my SBLive!

whats wrong with sblive..mynes fine...u guys just have bad experiances...me and the rest of us who think its fine should keep indoorsing it to people with our specs..

For all you SB owners asking whats wrong with it, two words: "POSITIONAL AUDIO".

However basically, the issue is not "whats wrong with SB", rather whats better in SC, Hercules, Philips.

Anand probably gets paid by creative to always mention SB in the recomended systems.
No wonder we never see any sound card comparision, cause he would have to lie to say its the best out there for gaming. I personally think this sucks. He does speaker reviews!

Why recomend a sound card, when there are others cheaper and better!Text

.........if there are any spelling error in this text, excuse it, English is my second laungage.

From what I've been told, I wouldn't buy any SB Live! sound card. From what I've seen with the computers my friend has built, he hasn't had any problems. I guess it's better to be safe then sorry. I'll stay away.

my sblive served me well in a p3 500, then a 700, but caused problems with my athlon/via chipset. So I sold it and bought a santa cruz, no big deal, and certainly no reason to boycott the card. There are always going to be hardware conflicts, it happens. As long as you do a little research before buying your shiz, you won't have problems. The good stuff Creative has put out over the years far outweighs the bad, in my mind.

"For all you SB owners asking whats wrong with it, two words: "POSITIONAL AUDIO". "

Actually, for positional audio to be a problem with the SBLive, it would have to first exist on the SBLive. 😉
