I got this E-mail today (deleted it, unfortunately) and it was calling to boycott Exxon and Mobil gas stations with the thought that as they are the market leader, if their business starts going downhill, they will reduce prices in order to get business back, and the other stations will be forced to follow suit.

Whatcha think? It doesn't seem quite as wacky as the national "gas out" day.

well, the concept is simple enough. industry consolidation. XOM replaced Wal mart for #1 in the fortune 500. GM was the leader for 15 years until a couple years ago.

and if they cut prices.....so? saves me money

Boycotts won't make any difference as long as federal regulators allow consolidation in any industry into a few major players.

You see the same problem in consumer banking and cable monopolies.

I dont' thik that'll work.....boycott has to be pretty large scale to even have an impact.....

The concept would only work to lower prices if, while boycotting one, we also bought no gas at any other.

Its hard to bring the man down.

Just steal gas. Fill up your tank, and drive off.

If the cops come after you, tell them that you were punishing Osama Bin Laden.. they will feel sorry for you for having a crackhead for a mother and will show mercy upon you.

NO! Buy Exxon and Mobile! They pay me dividends! For every $10 Million of gas you buy, I get $0.043!

Just because it worked for you doesn't mean anyone else will get away with it.

Personally, I try to use either Shell or Sunoco, I seem to get the best out of my car when on those fuels. Gulf and Speedway/Gastown/Bonded do well too. I don't put BP gas in my car anymore, it always made the car feel sluggish, plus I know too many mechanics who stay away from BP. Where there's smoke, there's fire.

As for boycotting Exxon/Mobil, nope. Russ has it right.
