Boy Scouts...Are there any here????

I ended up with my Life badge. I lacked one merit badge (one of the citizenships of the xyz ones) and I just got bogged down with school and prepping for college when I was 17. Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Tell you what, though, at least once a week I think about Philmont and I wish I could do that a few more times.

I needed one more merit badge for life. This was when I was 16/17... then I started working and it got harder and harder to go on any outings, because they would plan them the week before and I needed at least two weeks to get off of work.

That, and we accomplished all of nothing at our meetings. We would get there, do the pledge of alegience, then go outside and play tag for the whole hour and half.

I can't say I didn't have fun when we did do things... but it took me 3 years to get to star just because nothing ever got done... I can't imagine what it would take to go for eagle.

I wish I had the time to stick to it, but car payments, saving money for college and having a life don't mix well with boy scouts.

Just went on a Tiger Cub outing this morning. A hike out near Lake Hartwell. My son's a Tiger, I was a Boy Scout back in the day.

Anyone here ever been to Camp Old Indian?
Another person from the Clemson area on here? Wow. Every time I turn around, there's someone else from around here posting at ATOT.

As for Boy Scouts, I made Eagle when I was 17, I think.

Life from 14 on, 4 time SPL in two different troops (3 years total). Helped no less than a dozen guys get to Eagle and really build character. I still take heat to this day for never earning Eagle myself. It being a totally *hollow* brotherhood in modern times (I know an Eagle scout rapist), I feel that anyone who will judge me based on that alone isn't worth my time in the first place. BSA is only as good as its troop leaders. For every gay kid or scoutmaster with hurt feelings, a hundred young men learned how to be self-respecting, mature adults through teamwork and comradery.

A proud former boyscout.

Philmont was one of the best experiences of my whole life. Crew 626D4 reporting! 😀

Got my Eagle in '99. It was kind of joyless though, my scoutmaster died of cancer a couple of months beforehand, the day we laid him to rest is the saddest day of my life.

i had a lot of fun in scouts but i was too young and naive to understand their politics. i wouldn't allow my children to join it. there are other organizations that aren't so hateful.

Aww, that's sad! (psst, where can I find this troop!)

:moon:

I was one merit badge and a project away from my eagle at age... 14? and I'm 18 now with no eagle.

edit: I'm also very tired. I'm 17 for a couple weeks more.

<-- Eagle Scout🙂

Brother is an Eagle Scout as is my Dad and 3 out of 4 of his brothers(one only made it to Life)

<-- from the "Smiley the tent" council😛 (some may know what I'm talking about)

CkG

<--- Eagle Scout, as well as dad being an Eagle as well

definitely think about the philmont experience often as well and only hope to make it back there sometime when i can still complete the whole trail

The skills and knowledge that is learned on the path to Eagle is great to have and apply to everyday life.

My son is Star now and he's only been in Scouts for 11 months! 😉 I'm proud of him. I see him going on to Venturing. I do want to send him and his Dad to Philmont. I on the other hand will be in the Bahamas. 😉

They love the outdoors and camping so the expense and the time they get to spend together is well worth it. He respects his Dad and enjoys the time they spend together.

Our Troop is one of the best in the Nation and is ranked one of the top four in Baptist churches. I'm not Baptist, so don't condemn me just because my son belongs to a Baptist Scout Troop! 😉

I earned my Eagle Scout at age 16 in 1996 - Troop 251. My father is also an Eagle Scout. I feel that earning Eagle Scout helped me get into my top choice college. It was a great experince the whole way through.

I was in the Scouts. I did not find it to be fun or entertaining.

I would not encourage my kids to join because of their politics.
