"Boy bands" rant...

I know what most of you are thinking. They're not real musicians, they're just manufactured, talentless, boys with good looks who happen to catch a break and gained popularity solely on their looks. You're thinking, what kind of person besides a teenage girl can stand their music, much less like it. Or moreover, how could anyone LIKE their music, and not just buy their CDs because they "look good". These guys are a disgrace to all forms of music out there, and they should die for it.

But, while they may not be for everyone, there are millions of fans out there who do enjoy their music, and don't think of them as any more than they actually are. It's a form of entertainment, and nothing deeper than such. They don't claim listening to their CDs will change your lives or cure world hunger, but provide nothing else but pure music to listen to.

When people say their music isn't on the levels of groups like Nirvana or whoever it may be, so what? In zero ways do they try to replicate, imitate, or otherwise try to attract a similar audience as those groups do. With that being the case, there's little reason for people to make the comparison, or otherwise judge them with their tastes obviously being different.

People say their lyrics are shallow, and don't compare to the lyrics that have deeper meaning and such. Yet again it's a comparison with zero basis to it, as the two cannot be farther from being the same. It's like trashing "Something About Mary" because it was all toilet humor and doesn't have any insights on the world among us like American Beauty might have. So why the comparisons? The music groups have almost zero similarities other than the fact that they record and sell music, much like actors of all movies act and have people pay money to see their movies. But why don't people trash movies that are in completely different genres and "aren't up to par" with their old time favorites, while they trash "boybands" for the same reasons?

Another level of criticism that arises is that these guys don't write their own lyrics. Now based on the fact that these same people criticize them for being "shallow", it's a lude argument to start with. But even so the lyrics are much more poetic than I'm sure the average person can come up with. And while they're being blamed for not writing their music, people don't blame actors for not writing their own dialogues and scripts. Again, what's the difference? I've yet to see any actor's credibility decreased because he/she didn't create their own dialogues and have had to rely on memorizing scripts to get through a movie with.

*sigh* it's not like this hasn't been discussed before...

For the record, we say all this, because quite simply, boy bands ARE suck!!! 😉

that's ollllld dude 🙂

While we're on that topic, how to do people link boybands with gayness? Because their job involves singing love songs and having a mostly female fanbase? 😕

I know it's old, so what?

it's just a joke...although with so many females crazy about them I would call them gay if they didn't get some every single night.

Wow, I'm totally surprised at the maturity level of this forum here..I expected immature short one line responses to my long post, but I get THIS instead.

Amazing.

Well, I associate them with being gay because they dress 'funny' 🙂 Those kinda clothes don't seem to normal to me. Then again, i'm prolly argueing against males who wear tight white bond shirts... :disgust:

No problem GoldenBear, always willing to help... 🙂
btw, I don't think level of maturity has anything to do with length of post. Somehow I fail to see the correlation...

Huh? you talkin to me boy? I'll have you know I primarily wear Structure, can't knock that.

The music has a catchy beat to it. I could listen to some of the songs, I wouldn't turn the station if it came on the radio. The only one's I don't like are their slower songs.

Oh Christ...

btw, Goldenbear, did it ever occur to you that I and some other people don't feel like acting like a tight ass 24/7? Lighten up! 😉 You made a serious post, but this is OT, what the hell did you expect? 😛 😉

I agree with most of your points but I don't hate them for those reasons...I do hate them for the crapass music they put out. The other stuff is just icing on the cake.

I think alot of people hate boy bands because they're making alot of money in music based solely upon their looks. If they wanna make a living on their looks, they should be models or something. (don't say or actors, bad actors who get by on their looks piss me off. Damn Leonardo DiCaprio) (Brad Pitt is actually a very good actor so I say nothing about him getting by on his looks). I think people should buy music because it's good. I think Britney Spears is HOT, I also think that group Dream is completely beautiful. But will I ever buy their CD's, NO because their music is crap. I mean, they don't write their own music, they don't choreograph their own dance moves (which by the way is why i think they're gay. straight white men have no rhythm). What exactly do these guys do for themselves, NADA, ZIP, ZERO, NOTHING. These guys are all 100% replaceable and that's why I have no respect for them.

Ever notice how a seemingly intelligent thread can get turned around into a meaningless conversation about politically correct grammer?? 🙂

Thraashman, you're right, you should buy based on the music, not looks. First time I heard Dream's song, I had never heard of them, so I had no idea that they were hot. But I still thought "wow, this is a great song". I then bought the CD the day it came out.

I would not buy a CD because I thought one or more of the female members were good looking. That wouldn't stop me from watching the video with the tv on mute though. 😉

Many people in past threads have already outlined exactly why boy bands and pop stars like Britney and Christina suck so much ass. Ironically enough you and you boyfriend Deeko were only able to respond with short one line responses along the lines of "well if they're so bad how come so many people like them?". It would appear that's still your strongest argument.

I would link to that page that pits Nsync, BSB, Christina and Britney CDs against each other for the "Having lowered society's standards the most" award, or something like that, but I can't dig it up.
