In Trump's case it's probably not ignorance of the law, but contempt for the law, or the belief that he is above the law.Forget ignorance of the law, apparently some of the documents were clearly marked top secret.

It's been fun watching the tap dance show old Pete puts on for Aire Melber. So arrogant, and self righteous. Thinks he's on solid legal ground. I guess we will get to see if he will get charged with contempt in 2023 or some BS like that.Apparently peter navarro lost his shit when MSNBCs Ari Melber asked that exact question.
Clearly you are not a white male politician.Ignorance of the law has never been an acceptable defense.

The agency told Congress it has "identified items marked as classified national security information" in boxes that were sent to Mar-a-Lago.www.nbcnews.com
At some point the Justice Dept. is going to have to act.
Easy enough to do! Let's see, this isn't even a complete list, and some of these cover multiple issues:nm so many simultaneous investigations going on, I got them mixed up.

If you remember back a couple of years he Twittled about declassifying some documents and was sued by journalists who wanted access to these newly declassified docs. His attorneys argued (successfully) that while the President had the ability to declassify any document they wish just saying "it's declassified" doesn't work, there's a big administerial process to go through. How does that work with a former president? As president he can declassify anything, but once he's out of office if the material wasn't officially declassified is he still subject to criminal liability?
I'd assume if he's removing classified docs it's a huge deal.
One would think so, but has to be proven to be a “knowing” violation, so Trump can easily plead to be an ignoramus:How does that work with a former president? Deliberate Destruction or mutilation of records is potentially a more serious charge that is perhaps harder to ignore:

Most interestingly and potentially dangerously for Trump is if I'm not mistaken one or more people are on the record saying that Trump himself packed a lot of these documents and wouldn't let anyone else participate.Well Trump may have taken what he thought were personal belongings of his to Mar a Lago by mistake and he may have flushed some weather maps that he scribbled on with a sharpie down the crapper but everyone must remember that he's an honest guy that tells it like it is, made America great, knows that there are good people on both sides, built a wall along our southern border that he asked the Mexican president to chip in on to commemorate our lasting friendship with them, does not discriminate against people of color especially when he rents out those apartment units that he owns and prevented his friend Putin from invading Ukraine unlike what just happened to Slow Joe Biden.
I know all this to be true because both Hannity and Carlson on FOX said so and two guys can't be wrong about the same thing, amirite?

He’d probably throw Barron under the bus. He was just being helpful and packed everything on the table in the residence. Most interestingly and potentially dangerously for Trump is if I'm not mistaken one or more people are on the record saying that Trump himself packed a lot of these documents and wouldn't let anyone else participate.

Given the quote above about Hillary it doesn't seem he's going to successfully argue he didn't know that such activities were illegal. Most interestingly and potentially dangerously for Trump is if I'm not mistaken one or more people are on the record saying that Trump himself packed a lot of these documents and wouldn't let anyone else participate.
I'm assuming never 😕Apparently some of the records Trump stole from the White House are so highly classified they cannot even be described in an unclassified way.
At what point do we start seriously discussing prison for this?
